Just weighing up the options. Thinking about a small automatic to replace present car. Maybe new but more likely low mileage relatively new, but possibly older ! Mazda 2 and Yaris are possibilities but maybe another brand...
Confused when I look at Toyota website what the Yaris range is ! It talks of the Yaris hybrid and Yaris petrol but also 2019 Yaris; 2020 Yaris; and 2021 Yaris. Are they selling three different model years all at the same time? Each year then has lots of different versions. Anyone clued up on this?

I feel the build quality of Toyota cars are good but the CVT is not my preference. I have driven an older manual Mazda 2 with the 1.5 engine and liked it - the glove box rattled like mad though!

I took the wife on a test drive of the new (2021) Yaris on Monday - the demonstrator was newly registered and had 9 miles on the clock! That's a cracking little car ... (and the wife isn't sure that she's ready for anything quite that little). It technically goes on sale from 1st September I believe but the dealer would have been very happy to take an order on Monday. So, yes, I suspect Toyota are selling existing stock from MY 2019 and MY 2020 alongside the latest incarnation. The 2021 Yaris is really a very nice car ... at a slightly eye-watering price for a small car ... Edit: the CVT coupled with the 1.5L three cylinder hybrid engine is quite superb - Toyota have got this one right!

To be honest I think they are more than I want to pay for the occasional trip out.

Build quality I expect is very good but there are no interesting models in the line up. Very underwhelming....
There is a fancy limited edition out soon but mega mega expensive and ......Well limited in numbers .

I have always been impressed by Toyota's CVTs. Nothing at all like the old over-revving DAF cliché . We had a Mk1 Yaris 1.3 auto and it was superb.
I am looking forward to seeing the new Yaris-based SUV that is due in the New Year (and the Highlander about the same time 🤔).

Limited to a first batch of 24,000 cars!! Despite it's price seems more or less everyone on Pistonheads has ordered one!! Good deals on the last of the current shape atm. But the new shape does look a lot nicer both inside and out. Personally I think hybrids have had their day. Either go full electric or go petrol. You need to try the CVT before you buy. I thought it was dire. The manual box in the Yaris is actually quite nice.

I have had a hybrid before, a Prius, and don't know if I would prefer full petrol or hybrid. It would probably be the only car, so with the present infrastructure we wouldn't buy an electric. A neighbour has an electric BMW and his wife has a Tesla - they are always plugged in and seem to get the job done but I want a good value for money small car. I am still a puzzled by the range: Toyota talk of three Yaris model years being on sale. I have sent for a paper brochure for the Yaris and Mazda 2 which I hope will clarify things. I have seen new Yaris cars advertised by main dealers on Autotrader which then talk about Aygo in the description - I find inaccuracies annoying. Mazda adverts on Autotrader describe Mazda 2 autos as mild hybrid yet the Mazda website says the mild hybrid is only on manual transmissions! Then there is the Yaris Cross coming out - that might be what I want! Mind you the CRV has not moved again yesterday and today, so a new car is not urgent! Still looking at 3 door RAVs but I think my focus is changing away from that. Yesterday WCVC had a Landcruiser Amazon for sale for £13k - today it's gone! They have a Range Rover but it's not cheap!

Amazons are amazing pieces of kit but you definitely NEED one in order to deal with its sheer size. The standard LC (Prado) is already big enough but I would have one again tomorrow even though I can't really justify it (having said that, (m)BH has been making rather worrying noises about getting rid of the RAV for another LC!).
I had a Mazda 323 GT in the 90s (the one with the pop-up headlights) and put 95K miles on it over 3 and a bit years without having to spend anything other than routine servicing and consumables. It was a brilliant car. However my son had a Mazda 3 a while back and I have to say I wasn't impressed. Its build quality and solidity were nowhere near that of my 323. I had always rated the Mazda 2 before that but now, I'm not certain.

The Hybrid Yaris Excel we had was really nice, smooth and quiet as you'd expect in leccy mode and was really nippy. It did take a bit of getting used to but after a short while we both loved it and Mrs P said it was relaxing driving. The auto gearbox did rev away at first but again she got used to it and was quiet and smooth, an ideal car for tootling around in and was good on the motorway :TU: We would still have it but because of my back it was too low for me to get in and out of, whereas the Rav is ideal :TU:

My wife, although younger than me, has to work hard on maintaining mobility which I don't always remember!

The Yaris Cross could tick a fair few boxes. Looking forward to that.
What about a Fiesta. And there's the Fiesta Active if you want a higher seating position for better access/egress.

I agree the Yaris Cross could be just the car for us. I am going to have to decide whether to stick with old school technology of largish petrol engine and torque converter or go for the latest trend of a small engine and CVT. I do like the look and reports of the handling of the Fiesta but not sure about changing back from a Japanese car. There is a lot of choice but not sure what I want and not sure when to change! I think I need to get more knowledgeable about the cars available. It is also more complicated because it needs to be for me and my wife, and the occasional school run with granddaughters.

On the back of what you mentioned looked at Toyota's website myself this morning.
Lots of great deals on the current (Y20) Yaris so off to Toyota in Glasgow for a nosy tomorrow. Going to try the 1.5 petrol. The 1.33 is a bit frustrating at times.
They'll do you a pre-reg, so about £4k off list for 0% apr over 24months. Not bad cos most manufacturers save the 0% deals for new stuff. They do have loads in stock which is probably why.
I like the Yaris because I find it easy to get in and out of. Particularly after a hard training session when back and legs can be really quite tired and stiff.
Never thought I'd still have mine now, let alone be looking at another!! They are good cars. No driving machine, but that's not what they're trying to be to be honest.
