Rust??

Since owning the Yaris obviously I have been finding more out about it's good points and bad points and one of the bad points is that rust usually develops around by the rear reversing camera. So I checked Mrs Ps camera, which is hidden under part where the boot handle is so out of sight, and sure enough rust is just about coming through So I sent an email to the salesman who sold us the car and he came back saying that it is not covered under the warranty yet when I looked at what is covered I found this on the Toyota website - 12 year anti-corrosion and perforation warranty*
12 year unlimited mileage cover that protects against rust perforation affecting sheet metal body panels as a result of a manufacturing fault. This warranty can also be transferred to any future owner throughout the 12 year period.
*Excludes Hilux
3 year paintwork and surface rust warranty
3 year unlimited mileage cover protects against defects and surface rust as a result of a manufacturing defect.
So are these two warranties the same thing and should the rust appearing on our Yaris be covered do you think? If Toyota won't do the repair what would be my best course of action to prevent the rust getting worse, is there a product I could put on to stop the rust spreading or would it have to be a full rub down and repaint?

Big Kev posted up details of some German stuff that removes rust (and/or oil) - I think I read not to get it on your hands otherwise the bones in yer fingers crumble. maybe I'm getting mixed up. That warranty looks like it would cover the rust surely? Clearly a fault but if its one of these things fitted after it left the factory then I remember the hassle with the first RAV4s that had immobilisers fitted when they arrived in the UK then the company who supplied them went bust and the units went faulty....

You need to raise a case with the dealer Paul. It's not up to the salesman to decide. The issue should be dealt with by the warranty department.

I’d say readingthe warranty part you have posted it should be covered. As Charlie has said get onto the dealer or ring Toyota directly

Here will arise THE WRIGGLE FACTOR, mins.........has the car had a full Toyota ServicecHistory, so that they could inspect the paintwork, and find that rusting fault.......?
Oh look.......a flying pig.....!!
Then.........perforation warranty pish.........is this a HOLE rusted through, or is it just Surface Corrosion......? WRIGGLE, WRIGGLE........
RUST.......on a four year auld bliddy car......? Biggest WRIGGLE is that 3 year SURFACE RUST warranty......it has expired ffs.......? Paul.......you need a MASSIVE tube of Germoloids ointment.......smear the whole car........take it to Salesman and tell him where to stick his (fortunately now lubricated) car and you only want it back when it is treated and repainted.

Exactly BK  Full SH Kev. Ointment ordered. :TU: So who do I talk to. My options when phoning are 1-sales, 2-service, 3-parts, 4-sales and admin. I'm assuming that the rear view camera would have been fitted by Toyota from new along with the other extras the Yaris has that the original owner wanted. Looks to me that the hole as been drilled and no sealer or paint put on the edges of the metal as the rust is all round the hole, or would the hole have been pressed out when the metal sheets were cut out?? At the moment it looks to be just surface rust but with winter and all that salt coming up fast i'd like to get it sorted before it gets too bad. I've put a good dose of Colinite over it for now.

Paul, I would take Charlie up on his offer! The salesman sounds like a complete twat and needs teaching some basics re customer service. Even if the small print says "no", any salesman worth his salt would use such a relatively small fault as an opportunity to cement you into Toyota ownership for the rest of your life.
Our daughter's used BMW, which we bought from a dealer in Surrey, needed a new brake servo a month after she bought it. Admittedly we got a 3-year warranty with it in the deal (quite a good one as well) but BMW labour rates being what they are, there was a shortfall of about £300 -vs- what the warranty would pay for labour. I phoned the supplying dealer, explained the problem and the upshot was that they paid the local BMW dealer for the lot directly. All we had to do was collect the car. That's service. As a result I would definitely buy from them again even if they are nearly 200 miles away.
I reckon your Toyota man could benefit from some Charlie-education.

Thanks Charlie but we'll see how things go first :TU:
Jim-yep that's what you would expect to happen with customers but nope not even bring it along and we'll have a look at it from him.
OK I phoned up yesterday and got put through to sales where I spoke to one of the sales blokes who helped show us the Yaris when we was looking at it, so I explained to him the situation and what the previous sales bloke had said and was told that he would look into it and get back to me, he didn't seem to be aware of the Toyota warranties I had pointed out?? So will wait now for a call back I won't be holding my breath.

I hope the dealer sorts this out for you. I would expect a main dealer to want to keep their customers happy. Why wasn’t this picked up when they inspected the car before handing it over to you? How they respond to problems will affect their reputation. Good marketing is to solve problems whenever possible. Treat a customer well and they will tell others but treat badly and many more will know!

POLITE BUT FIRM........you are going the long, wrong way round with the Monkey.......the Grinder of Organs must now step in. You MUST bring into conversation, not in writing, your involvement in a Toyota drivers' forum.
