4-star First Drive of new RAV in Calif in today's Autocar. Good start. Looking forward to being able to test drive it. Jim I won’t even be bothering to go and have a look. Wrong power plant for me so it looks like another brand next time around.

Wrong power plant for me so it looks like another brand next time around. I get where you are coming from, Charlie. I've liked the diesels that we have had over the years, mostly Toyotas, RAVs and LCs not forgetting the Shogun, which was a really nice set of wheels. And the political reaction to Volkswagen's cock up on diesel emissions has been totally over the top but, what can you expect from today's calibre of public servants? The reality is that manufacturers have pushed diesel technology about as far as they can given that it was never designed to be anything other than a crude agricultural engine fuelled by the dregs of vegetable products. The modern diesel engine is quite incredible in that respect but unless you are doing reasonably big mileage, DPFs just won't cope. So an alternative has to be found. For me, at the moment, petrol does the job. Both our Saabs are petrol torbos and go just as I would like but the road tax on the 4x4 in particular is painful so at some point it will have to go - but hopefully not for a while yet! At some time a replacement will be be necessary and maybe the petrol hybrid will be the answer hence my interest in the new RAV. Plus the fact that MBH likes the commanding seating position in cars like the LC so at some point I guess that I will have to replace the Saab.........

I do like the styling. Looking forward to seeing it next year.
Toyota do have some smart looking vehicles coming to the uk next year. Be interesting to see how they're received because the current range; Rav, Auris, Camry...are miles behind the competition atm. Fingers crossed.
