Coming back from shopping earlier today when we had a bang bump bump bump all along the underside of the Rav and Mrs P said she saw summat in the rear view mirror in the road so turned around and found this part which looks like the front brake dust shroud. I believe that this part is prone to rusting like this and they were picked up on the health check and MOT but didn't think they would be this bad assuming the other side is the same. So do they need replacing and do we need genuine Toyota ones? At least the label stayed on

No need to replace them at all to be honest ..cars years ago never had them, they keep some of the damp and spray off the disc surface 👍🏻

The front ones I feel are much more important than the £500.00 (!!!!!) rear ones for keeping brakes dry and since aboot 70% of braking comes from said fronts...…
They are very reasonable from that garden landscaper diddy Kingo….aboot £30..00 I paid IIRC...…and there is a cheats way to slot the bolt holes to fit instead of boring drive shaft removal, inventorised by me maselluf.

Hell's Teeth! Those are comprehensively knackered! They, well this one certainly is Jim, it looks worse though as a van drove over it before we could get it back safely and see if it be be repaired and replaced

Well after the sound advice you have given in the past BK and with your wealth of experience on said vehicles, I will get straight onto Capability in morning and fire him a mail over :TU: , but in the mean time how does one jack the Rav 4.2 up and support it with axle stands both back and front ??

This is NOT a job I would recommend you do yourself.......it entails removal of front wheel, caliper, then disc, and MAY require heat on head bolts that are holding on the remainder of your bearded dustshields. That is where it will become apparent that by judicious slotting of the mounting holes on the NEW shields, one need only loosen these bolts and SLIP the new shields behind and re-secure.

No Kev I won't be doing it but just wanted to take the wheels off and have a look meself to see how bad things are. I have a pair of new discs from the previous Rav which could go on when it's been stripped down if needed, but not sure where to place the stands once it's jacked up? Plus I want to have a look at the fuel filler pipe that corrodes??
