Trying to cut a long story short here so bear with me please folks.
Back in March the misses decided she wanted a new car. We looked and found a cracking deal on Drive the Deal for an Audi S3 for £29,999. OK the A3 is due for replacement shortly but this didnt really bother us as the end of a life-cycle is often when you get a well speced car for a good price. Car ordered and Audi Grimsby took a £1,000 deposit. We've recently learnt we've missed the boat on the current model and will be near the front of the queue for a 2020 car. However, spec, price and delivery of the new car is anyone's guess. Certainly looking in the press i'd say the S3 model could be up to a year away and tbh we're already at the top of our budget.
We're not in a strop, well maybe with the audi dealer because he's a pain to get hold of (probably because he now knows what we know and is expecting a call to get our deposit back), but the question is do we indeed request the deposit back and move on?
The plan is for me to take on the misses' mazda once her new car arrives, but tbh i'm quite happy driving my rav. This is where ££ come into play. If the mazda is sold it's worth more now than next year. If the price of the new car is more than the old model (guaranteed I'd say) then you can see the sums start going in the wrong direction.
Confused??!! I am!!

You placed a deposit on a car they can no longer supply and cannot do so in reasonable time. You are fully entitled to your deposit back you are the injured party.
Write them a letter informing them of your decision. Keep a copy of course. Send recorded delivery then when it’s arrived print of the confirmation from the PO website.

On the Audi website it suggests that the S3 starts at £37,020. I really can't see the new 2020 model coming in at a much lower price and if there's a queue (that you are to be at the front of) there's a good chance that the price may be rather higher with no discounts available. I guess if you really want the car and the dealer will commit to a deal (i.e. price) that you 'like' then you could be tempted to hang on. Otherwise, wot Charlie said!

Yeah, £37k is too much for an A3. But we didn't order one at 37k. We ordered one at 30k. Well 31k to be precise (added a sunroof).
The dealer will happily refund the deposit, had a bit of email tennis this afternoon to confirm, we don't have an issue there. Its the whether or not they'll commit to the same deal on a MY20 car. That hasn't happened and we're just not sure whether it will so is there any point hanging around to find out. Maybe better to just get on with life.

If ordered at £31k, and price of new model COULD be £37k, what the Friar Tuck in these days of austerification justifies a 20% far king price hike.....? My absolute dream car is the Audi A8.......would never buy one just because it’s an Audi......
Audi must really have a great view of their tonsils as their heads are so far up their bums.

Now, if you we're part of a group like VAG that had been hit with an enormous fine and associated costs, how would you recoup that? I couldn't possibly comment. Audi must really have a great view of their tonsils as their heads are so far up their bums. You might even think you were so special, than rather than take a standard part out of your groups part bin, you'd come to the component supplier and ferk them around a bit for something a bit unnecessarily different, knowing full well there wasn't a precipitation in the Atacama's chance of you actually buying it. I think it's called time wasting. I couldn't comment on that either.

The £37k figure was the one I pulled from the Audi website for the outgoing model - so clarki was actually looking at 20% discount on that which, I suspect, is a part of why it appealed in the first place. It's anyone's guess at the base price of the incoming model ... And I really do fancy an Audi R8, and ditto, and I couldn't afford it anyway ... but I can dream.

My son was in a similar situation as the OP where his wait was over 6 months for his GTI. The price was increased when his car was due for delivery but the dealer stuck to his original old price contract. So effectively he was 14% better off.

37k - 2k (finance deposit contribution) - 1.5K (dealer deposit contribution) - Drive the Deal discount = £31k. Moreorless.
Any thanks folks, deal cancelled this morning. The car hunt continues...

If I quoted IBM a price then told them to deduct 20%, they wouldah asked if my male appendage could reach ma bum, and invite me to self copulate. Discounts in the car trade only serve to confuse imho mins......

Discounts in the car trade only serve to confuse imho mins...... It strikes me that there is no fixed price for anything these days and cars are no exception. Although I did look at an MX5 some time back in a smallish set up that tended to stock a lot of Mazdas (if I had liked them more I would say a Specialist) and was told that there was no discount. I wasn't going to be greedy but to be told that's the price and you'll pay more for a warranty meant I walked. My wife also hated the place because the access was poor and also the saleswoman was spilling out of her top which was quite off putting! As for the Audi, too much money for me but so are many cars! I would have a look for a low mileage near new version, maybe a pre-registered one. Our current CRV had done fewer than 500 miles and a few months old and we saved more than 25% of the cost new. I haven't tried Drive the Deal but have wondered about trying CarWow in the future.

I was at an independent car dealer looking at a car with/for my brother-in-law the other day. There was a young guy there about to do a deal on a stunning looking 2017 2.2 diesel RAV in a very dark blue metallic paint with about 17K miles on it. He was paying 15K less after 18 months than it was when new.........

I did quite nicely with them, when the current RAV was purchased. Supplying dealer was a pleasure to deal with too. Saves any of the silly games. Possibly if you're a negotiation guru you could do better. You makes your choice............ Also, the one dealer that I trust to do any servicing/warranty work, would only come within £200 of the price and not even match and that was hard work getting to that. £200 seemed a little bit crazy on the price of a new vehicle, because for that they lost a sale. I suppose they all have their bottom line. Was expecting a phone call a few days later saying they would match, but it never came.

Good feedback about CarWow. I guess there must be a bottom line but the Honda dealer I use would rather make a loss to keep a customer than let a rival local dealer take the custom. On the other hand many years ago I did a cracking deal on a new Nissan but the dealer went bust and I had to start again at another dealer !
