...no, not a new car 😥 I'm getting a new head unit installed to jazz up my interior and to be more easily connected to my music etc. I deliberately did not go for a Sat Nav unit and went for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible instead and it keeps two mobiles registered and connected at the same time. In regards to Sat Nav, I can use Google Maps/Waze with no effort at all. In prep for the de install of the existing unit, I have wiped all personal information and will keep it to re install when/if I sell the RAV4. I'll provide a photo and feedback next week. www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/car/nav_mm/carplay-mm/DMX7017DABS/

After I researched what it can do, my next question to the guys at John Klies in Reading, was, "what will I lose" in my car that I currently already have !!!
I knew I was going to lose the HDD, but to be honest I use Spotify and stream my music in the car, as I have a large mobile phone data pack, so not a issue.
According to them, I will lose the connectivity from the usb port that's on the centre console next to the mirror controls which provided charging and connectivity to the existing head unit, but that's fine, as I won't need that function, because both our phones can connect to the new head unit at the same time, but strangely, they said it may not even provide a charging point, but I have told them that surely with all their expertise, they can do something to keep that, as it's very handy. Steering wheel functions will all be the same via a vehicle specific cable/loom !!

USB terminal Yes, pigtail, 20 cm
USB Type 2.0 High speed
USB extension cable supplied yes, 1m
Drive Change Yes
Works with Android Auto Yes
Supported audio files MP3/WMA/AAC/WAV/FLAC/Vorbis/DSD
Supported video files MPEG1/2 / MPEG4/WMV / H.264 / MKV
Repeat / Random Play Yes
Resume play Yes
Time code display Yes
1,5A Charge Capability for Smartphone (BC 1.2).So, the implication is that you can plug in something that can present an audio 'file store', and, because it conforms to the USB 2.0 spec it must provide power via the USB port ...

I have Android Auto on my cars 'infortainment' system and think it is very good. I had a radio fitted by John Kleis a few decades ago.... everytime it received an RDS alert it stopped working! I went back and waited for the sucking through the teeth, raised eyes and "who fitted this then?" question - and quite enjoyed showing them their own receipt

Your USB point in the car would still charge. We had a similar unit but a pioneer one and it worked fine for charging just no music. I think Chris (three5) has a kenwood unit in his Rav too.

For some reason, I cannot post a photo of my new head unit, can't seem to see the icon to add a photo🙄
Anyway, it's all good....however, they could not manage to keep power to the USB port next to the door mirror controls!!! I reckon they probably could not be bothered. They also had all sorts of issues connecting the reverse camera !! Apart from that, I'm happy using Google maps and Spotify on the new unit.
I'm determined to get power to that usb port, so if anyone knows how I can do it, and if so, please speak in simple non technical jargon.
Cheers
Bobby

Hi Bobby , regarding not being able to post photos , are you posting in the 'reply' or 'quick reply' ? If it's the latter then that's possibly the reason why. Ita caught me out numerous times..

I'm determined to get power to that usb port, so if anyone knows how I can do it, and if so, please speak in simple non technical jargon. What did they do with the black usb connector that, according to page 82 of this - manual.kenwood.com/en_contents/attachDownload/88350- should be sticking out of the back of the headunit? Is that it poking out of the dash, down by the fag lighter socket? (If so, how "amateur" for a "professional" outfit.) I would have thought, this probably would do the job: www.connects2.co.uk/Product/ProductItem/CTTOYOTAUSB.2Assuming the lead is long enough and assuming it does actually come with the "dash cutout" socket end, as shown. Rip-off price for what it is and yes I know it says Yaris, but Toyota cut-outs are usually a standard size. This probably is the simplest (although more expensive) way, as if you already have a USB socket (I don't know whether you do, as I don't know the vintage of the removed toyota headunit), using the existing USB socket may involve a DVM in continuity mode and a soldering iron to put a USB plug on the end of the existing harness. This would clearly be technical jargon. Assuming connector 8 on page 81 of: manual.kenwood.com/en_contents/attachDownload/88350is a 3.5mm socket and assuming the other plug on www.connects2.co.uk/Product/ProductItem/CTTOYOTAUSB.2nis a 3.5mm plug (they both look like they are), you might even get the av input to work too, assuming they didn't actually use connector 8 for the reversing camera video signal (I hope it was connection 13).
I make no guarantees. Suck it and see.

Thanks for this, I actually also have the paper copy of this manual in front of me. I'll look into this and have a chat with them.
The thing you see is a cigarette lighter emergency torch 😀

I'm aware that's a torch. There appears to be something obscuring the heated seat switches.

Ah, yes, that's where I plug my phone cable into.
It was me that wanted to have it there, as that little hidden shelf is ideal to sit my phone, as I no longer need to see the phone when plugged in, as it's all on the head unit screen now.
The offered to put it in the glovebox, but I said I was too lazy to keep opening and closing the lid !!
