Kev the Soul Red paint is a topic heartedly discussed on the MX5 forum. It has a dreadful reputation for chipping heavily. You're not still believing what you read on that forum are you??!! lol Saw a Veyron in London the other month, covered in stone chips it was, front, roof, around the wheel arches. Terrible. But it is only paint, I cant really get all that stressed about paint tbh. As long as there are no dents and it looks good after a proper wash and wax. The polishing brigade do get quite upset about swirl marks, stone chips, rain spots, etc - life's too short if you ask me. Quantify ‘life’s to short ‘ ? There are people who smoke. pi$$ money up the wall..... Ir many other things. Then there are some who like to keep thier cars at thier best. Now I can with good reasons present why life’s to short. By now now you may have picked up that I’m one of the polishers ?

I think the infotainment system on lots of makes of cars are hyped up in the marketing and probably fail to deliver. Our CRV does what I need in terms of DAB, fuel computer, and USB connection to memory sticks but it has other features such as HDML input that I never use. The large screen sometimes goes blank and I think that's going to be a trip to the dealers but then it reboots itself and all is well! I think quite a few of the complex paint finishes present a challenge to repair but that Soul Red is a spectacularly great colour ! Ours is also a 2017 car and I have just booked it in for its 2nd year service next month. Under warranty until it is 3 so won't swap until then but I have a 5 year service plan so may keep for longer. Strangely Mazda didn't offer a service plan. That's probably changed now. 5 years always seems to be a sensible time to keep a car IMO. The depreciation curve is a bit more on your side and its gone before any big bills; timing belts, clutches, knackered suspension, etc loom.

The wheel arche shape looks silly, whoever dreamt this up must have being brought up playing computer games. They start off way to expensive .We have gone over to the dark side and ordered a Mazda CX-5 gt nav + petrol I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the CX5. I suspect they are an impressive car to drive and own. We are not expected it to be ready for collection until after the 21/3 .We initially picked a Crystal Soul Red colour, then picked up on the paint issues,so changed to a Machine Grey colour. I have to say Mitchell Mazda in Ellsmere Port are very competitive on prices. Will report back after a few weeks of ownership .

Had to go to my local Mr. T this morning to pick up the rubber bung that goes in the top of the tailgate on the 4.2 (why do those things always go walkies? Every 4.2 we've had has lost at least one.) and had a chance to look at the new 4.5 in the metal. Love it!!
I think it looks really good. Nice and chunky with really good proportions. I could do without the powered tailgate which I think is just an unnecessary complication. Personally, I reckon that gas struts on the bonnet would be good ; I always think that they make the car seem more upmarket. Certainly they are a lot more convenient than a stay. I would need to drive it to see if the CVT box is any good as there have been some negative comments about it in some road tests. But it has been praised for excellent fuel economy.
I like it so far. 👍

I suspect they are an impressive car to drive and own. Well by some strange twist of fate I seem to have had the CX5 passed over to me in the last week (misses has ordered an S3 - but that's a whole other story) to see if I fancy it to replace the rav. My thoughts, good, bad and whatever for anyone that's interested; handles very well, much better than the rav - in the dry but in the wet it's, well, just poor really. Ours is only FWD and it shows as soon as the clouds open. It'll understeer very quickly, with even a little throttle and steering lock, the TC is very slow to act and when it does it's far too vicious. The rav would run rings around it in wet/slippery conditions. The seats are very comfy, but not very supportive, particularly the seat base??!! You do seem to sit a bit higher, which I like, but it is more like on the car rather than in it, which I don't. The diesel engine is strong, deffo quicker than the rav and getting 5 or 6 more mpg. The gearchange is also very nice, mazdas always were though IIRC. The stereo sound is superb, the Bose set up excellent. The rest of the infotainment system is just like anything else tbh. The bit I really cant get over is the packaging though. Its for sure a bigger car, you can tell when driving, but the interior space just seems much less. The boot shape is crap, my brothers golf will hold more!! and sill ridiculously high. Now I use my rav for work and trust me she works, big loads are commonplace and the mazda just wouldn't swallow them like the Toyota, no chance. The bit I do like though is the look of the car. In the swimming pool car park amongst all the mundane stuff it does look great. In 1 week I've had 2 or 3 nice comments, mainly from women, which is nice. The interior is just as nice, a real step up for what is primarily a run of the mill manufacturer. Will it replace the rav?? Not sure. It'll depend on trade in value, etc. Plus I cant help but think i'd miss the 4wd. It's lovely to drive, much more modern, great to look at, but it ain't my rav, if that makes sense. It's the old adage of I'd be quite happy if someone gave me one, but would I buy one with my own money??... Oh, and the dog prefers the rav, and tbh what my dog says, goes!!

Question Kev: how did you decide which strut(s) to get? I wouldn't mind putting one on the RAV (I think one would be enough; the Saab makes do with one even though it has a heavy clamshell bonnet) but it would need to have just enough tension otherwise it might not close! Also, where did you get it (them)?

I've got the same ones on mine David. Definitely worth while. I can't remember where the original link to the supplier came from ( I can remember it was, er on a different forum in the days when things ran happily there  ) but the overall cost including frieght from the US wasn't bad. Was it maybe a time limited special offer?
