OK folks well i've been phoning round and getting on line quotes and are all coming out pretty much the same except for Aviva who are doing 20% off new quotes for previous customers which Mrs P was and they are by far the cheapest even without the discount so looks like we will be going with them for now and keeping the little Rav, well for six months at least as it was also taxed this morning to run from the 1st November. Why do quotes come out with such a huge difference in prices, LV wanted nearly £1300 which is more than triple what Aviva have quoted us. That's good, Paul. It gives you some breathing space to decide what to do later. Meanwhile enjoy the RAV. Cheers Jim :TU: Yes twelve months now to decide depending the MOT goes now next month with Toyota which is the next concern as the MOTs were done by the previous owners friend at their local garage but we were told that the breaks were just an advisory last year? So now that Mrs P has started a new insurance policy on the Rav will her NCD start with this policy and also continue with the Yaris, just seems daft if that is the case as P mentions?

Why do quotes come out with such a huge difference in prices, LV wanted nearly £1300 which is more than triple what Aviva have quoted us. The variance in quotes is simple, Paul. 1. Have we reached target for today......this week.....this month.....? Yes......quote any old pish. No........negotiate with possible client. 2. How much is this diddy willing to pay.......? Much as what Phaeton says makes sense to us barrack room lawyers, when push comes to shove.......who would win the argument in the event of a claim being made.....? Ma mild mannered mate Paul, or some big inshoorinse company saying YOU tried to bend the RULES OF TRUST.........GYTF.......SEE YAY IN COURT. My money is on the insurance company winning that one HANDS DOWN.....LOL. Hi ya Kev :TU: Nah Kev Mrs P nor meself wouldn't risk what P is suggesting as what you say would happen to us  I have a mate who reckons each year he gets his new policy through it's always higher so he phones em up as a moan and a rant and always but always gets it cheaper??? Now I've tried and as soon as I ask I get told to go elsewhere if I can get it any cheaper and usually there is little difference so stay put.

This little Black Rav sounds really throaty compared to our two previous Ravs so would this piece of pipe be making the difference in the sound? Would that piece have been on the exhaust or do you think it's been added on at some point?

Pretty sure that's an 'add on' Paul. Probably worth getting someone to inspect the exhaust for leaks.

OK thank you David :TU: The exhaust is new and still has the labels on but I've just checked it again and can't hear it blowing anywhere though the downpipe from the manifold looks heavily rusted but seems solid enough? But while I was looking I have noticed some oil by the prop shaft, engine end but no oil has dripped onto the floor in over a week now although it hasn't been run so not sure where the oil has come from??

A tiny bit of oil spreads like hell and looks like a lot. If it ain’t wet or dripping stop worrying. You bound to get things like that on an older car.
Put the palm of your hand over the exhaust to force the pressure when looking for leaks.

The chrome exhaust trim has been added after market , as to a possible exhaust blow ..the flange joint behind the rear exhaust can corrode and leak. the oil leak is the pinion oil seal...as long as the level is checked it can look like that for years and not give you any trouble....but if it starts to leak on the floor time to get it replaced.

Piccy of oil?? Get the oil level in the transmission checked, if the level is OK that's the best indication you can have that the "leak" is not a problem. I always remember a very experienced LR mechanic saying to me "You show me a LR without an oil leak and I'll show you one with no oil in it!" In this case I'd estimate that there is only just enough leakage to keep the seal lubricated

OK thanks for the replies folks so not been a mechy what does that seal do apart from sealing, is it a big job to do? Must admit I didn't see the oil when I gave it the once over when buying it
Also while I looking under it earlier I noticed that all the parts underneath are covered in a thick black coating which is breaking off now and feels like rubber, so would this also been done from new or after?

Well I started the Rav up for the first time in a couple of days and it just about turned over so let it run for a while, while I carried on titivating it then I thought i'd check that oil leak and this time there was some oil on the floor

Difficult to tell Paul. A 'rubbery' coating is applied in high abrasion areas around wheel arches at the factory but there are also 'after market' treatments that look similar. Is there any sign of rust where the coating is peeling?

I just broke off what I could reach.
