Hi all, Corolla is playing up a bit, daughter complains it misfires a bit, at lower speeds, sorts itself above 30mph. Car is still drive-able, just about.
Thing is I sit down south, and know nothing about garages in Edinburgh.
Could anyone recommend a good reliable garage, preferably south of Edinburgh?
(If you do not want to post, could PM me)
Many Thanks
Menachem

I ask as HT leads breaking down was common a few years back 👍🏻 HT leads were replaced about 3 years ago, together with the distributor, though the distributor was an old one (new part is about £700... ). the cup and arm were replaced as well. From her description, either it is again the distributor, or some contact on the way. A bit hard to diagnose from afar.

I am about 30 odd miles from Edinburgh in Motherwell. Bothy (bothwell buyer ) recommends this place in Motherwell which does his engine transplants etc - www.the-garage.co.uk/index.php

Ask her to send you a photo of air filter assembly, Menachem......if anything like wife's petrol Rav, it will have its MAF air sensor on top of the housing or sloping towards rear of engine/bulkhead. What you are describing is exactly what her Rav did......bought some MAF cleaner spray......LET IT DRY THOROUGHLY........prey hesto.....sorted....!!!

Thanks Menachem Got the picture of the air intake: I am guessing the MAF is the black blob I have circled? Or does it has a MAF filter at all? read somewhere that MAF came only from 2000 models onwards. Corolla in 1999.

Thanks - I think there is no MAF on this one, as too early. It might be the Lambda sensor, as I had some issues with it a few years back (I cannot say if it is the same, as car is not here...) and it was replaced (about 40k miles ago). In the mean time, the car behaved and did not repeat this, so hope it will be OK. In two weeks she is coming down with the car (going to replace clutch...) and we will see. If the car won't make on its own power, it has comprehensive AA cover... hope not to need to use it.

The MK2 MR2 was notorious for misfiring (1989-1999) or not starting, it was normally the coilpack which was bolted to the inner wing & used the mounting bolts to get the earth. Remedy was to unbolt the pack, clean up the wing, use new bolts & some silicon grease. Does she say it happens mainly when happens when it's damp/raining?

In the corolla the coil pack is inside the distributor - as one module. The car starts first time as it always did. I did think that it all started after a lengthy period the car was covered by and driven in snow, so yes contacts are suspected. Also, it got better when snow disappeared. As said, I get to see the car in two weeks time, so will look at these. Thanks for the advice! M.

Hmmm... so daughter called me yesterday - car completely dead. Luckily very near her house, so she took the bus instead. It seem that it will come home not under its own power.
So now I have a dilemma: From her description, it is the problem we had a few years back, and it is the distributor that is gone, or the coil. The coil is part of the distributor and is a very expensive part. Last time I managed to source a second hand part for 1/10 of the new price.
Should I repair it this time, considering I need to also replace the clutch (~300gbp), which all together will probably be shy of 500gbp (if I manage to source a replacement...) or do I scrap the car and buy something else (will probably look for something around 2k mark) which might have its own issues... Also, could there be a 'replacement' part, with a separate distributor and coil pack?
Decisions decisions...

Well the positive is you are chasing an actual defined fault, the problem with misfires especially intermittent ones is knowing you've actually fixed it. The thing that may sway your decision is whether your daughter has lost faith in it, if she has then there maybe no point in even bringing it home, sell it as is & save the money you'd spend getting it home on the newer one.
