Bob might well have shut the barn door after the milk has been spilled…….I seem to remember the BOTTOM of the METAL ROTTING diesel filler pipe in the wheel arch rear does indeed become rubber. It looked a bit cracked on the outside of wifes Rav……maybe INSIDE is worserer….? JISTAFOT…… no sign of anything untoward under there but maybe i need to take off the shielding and have a look. i did do an inspection a few years ago and all was well but it may need to be revisited. will give it a blast with the pressure washer this weekend and take off the covers :TU:

The fuel filler pipe is made up of 2 pipes. A large pipe being the filler. A second narrower pipe being the breather. Both corrode. They corrode near the bottom, but also further up behind the plastic shroud. If the breather is holed by rust, maybe it could be sucking debris in which is what you see at the filter. You wouldn't see a leak...but perhaps wiff of fuel. But if its in the wheel arch, maybe no smell. New filler pipes are around £90, or about £300 for a Toyota branded one, which Kingo told me is now rust-proofed.

not looking very pretty under the cover ran my hand all around the pipes but found no holes that i could feel.
video of the rust!looks like i need to replace it regardless of finding a hole or not. is there anywhere else that could let in bits and pieces ? all pipes joining to the tank seem fine and tight.

Wonder if you took the pipe off to the tank, you could get a look in with a torch….just to see if it’s full of crud 🤔

The breather pipe will be porous in state like that...maybe its allowing road dust/soil in. And try to run the tank almost dry to avoid fuel everywhere. A wee camera on a flexy thing would maybe allow you to see in. (Thought..a drain rod company will have flex cameras that could look down.)

Wow I wasn't expecting to see it looking that bad.

Wow I wasn't expecting to see it looking that bad. Its a shocking design! If the plastic shroud had been sealed around the edges, may have helped. And the pipe doesn't last (well the new ones might). The last pipe I replaced was a 2006 low mileage....was well corroded.

been looking around for the part and found it from £60 -£200. i cannot justify the toyota genuine part on a 20 yr old rav, so i just need to decide which aftermarket copy to go for. apart from the brackets that come with some of the parts i can only see the need for a couple of hose clamps. looks like its going to be a busy week geting ready to fit the new part, it looks easy enough .... will just have to take my time.
