thanks for the idea, i will have a think on how i could implement it. confused.com ! took the fuel filter off again and drained the contents out. not as bad as last time but still not what i would expect after only 2 weeks. the filter looked pristine so i put it back on the car and went for a drive. all back to normal again. how can so few particles casue such big problems ? have i had a dodgy batch of fuel ? the particles are soft and appear to be of a natural nature, looks like debris that falls off trees. iam wondering if i have a broken fuel filler pipe and that maybe letting debris in when i go off road, no sign of any leafkage under the wheel arch though.

Maybe silly suggestion but I’ll say it anyway ! Is the fuel filler pipe in good condition and not holed..letting road dirt in ? Or… Wonder if you could get a look in the tank to see if it needs draining of muck, is the tank sender access panel under the back seats ?

not silly at all, i thought about the fuel filler pipe as well. no visual sign atm of any issues but may investigate more. and yes i believe the tank access is under the back seats. not sure about getting access for inspection though. i will have a look around for a video.

not a clue now, cleaned the small amount of debris from the filter again and all was fine for about 3 days. then back to the same problems of loss of power again, steadily getting worse throughout the weak. could it be a hole in the top of the tank ? as no fuel on road where the car is parked and no fuel spill when filling up off oversea soon so it will have to wait for further investigation.

Sich , did you try changing the fuel filter again ? no, not yet. last time i took it off it looked spotless apart from the bits in the bottom and when i put it back in it was fine for 3-4 days. do you think it will have filled with bits already and they are not visible ? noticed a little white plastic plug in the bottom of the screw in bottom sensor last time i took it off, it unscrews. i was wondering if i can use it to drain the bits out instead of removing everything ? off on hols to croatia sunday so it may have to wait til i return. stu

If those bits were in the filter when it was drained off , I would definitely change the filter again.

What did this debris look like …hard or soft ?

soft stuff, could be squashed between the fingers. Okay..I’m thinking then a rubber hose breaking down on the inside ??

Okay..I’m thinking then a rubber hose breaking down on the inside ?? that could be the cause, never even considered that one. i should add that when i say the bits were soft they disintegrated and went to a daark smear when rubbed between the fingers.

Bob might well have shut the barn door after the milk has been spilled…….I seem to remember the BOTTOM of the METAL ROTTING diesel filler pipe in the wheel arch rear does indeed become rubber. It looked a bit cracked on the outside of wifes Rav……maybe INSIDE is worserer….? JISTAFOT……
