I am sure I remember a number of posts regarding the procedure to underseal the 4.2. The 3 door auto I've bought is remarkably clean underneath with few signs of rust...and I'd like to keep it that way. Anyone remember where the info is? My memory prompts me to think Anchorman went to great lengths for someone to underseal their car (probably a 5 door), - I'm looking for pointers - the obvious rusty bits from my 4.1s are around the sills, rear subframe mounts, rear cross member. Does one need to access box sections for these?
Might the info be on that other forum? cheers for any info

My Mazda MX5 though really solid had light surface rust mainly on the rear subframe and it’s surrounding components. They all do it most don’t worry but I wanted it sorted.
I had the use of a wheels free lift which helped. I’m not sure I could have done the job without it .
Started off scrubbing every tiny bit of the surface rust off. I used a power file for the bulk of it and a Dremel with a long flexi shaft for the difficult areas.
Once done I painted the area with Vactan which is a very good rust converter the Bob recommended. The main reason for the Vactan was to give an excellent primer. Vactan converts rust but I’d removed that but to me it was belt and braces plus as I say a brilliant primer. Once applied it’s 24 hours minimum before applying the finish coat.
For the finish I used Dinitrol. Widely regarded as the best underbody rust treatment. I used aerosol cans and the ones supplied allowed the use of the entire contents of the can and you can spray at angles and even upside down.
I believe the prep is key. I spent 12 hours scrubbing and cleaning and allowed the time to dry between applications.
Had the car in for MOT recently and it looks as good as when I’d finished it. Though to be fair the car doesent get used and never in the rain.

Can’t better Charlie’s approach which looks bulletproof. I’ve never had any rust issues on any of our RAVs other than the “corrosion on brake pipes” bollocks by Mr. T testers at MoT which I’m convinced was just an attempt to scam money for “greasing the pipes, Sir”; at a cost of course. I only ever applied some ACF50 to the fuel filler pipe on a 3-dr and that was purely preventative having decided to check the pipe after reading of a member having suffered a corroded pipe on here. Mine was OK and the treatment was just in case. In my experience the 4.2 is very resilient re rust but it won’t hurt to add some protection. Other than ACF50, I’ve always found Waxoyl to be easy to apply and very effective. Never needed it on RAVs but have used it on other cars over the years.👍👍

Congratulations on the purchase 👍🏻👍🏻 This is the stuff I used on my current RAV4.

The Dinitrol 4941 as per Bobs picture is the exact type I used. It Doesent go hard and stays slightly waxy to the touch.
There is another product that sprays right over light surface rust with little or no preparation . ( can’t think of the name ) that has been discussed on another thread. It supposed to topped up though which didn’t appeal to me .
I was lucky in securing the lift over a long weekend which made access easy. Lying on my back under a car would have been a struggle and when we’re struggling the end result is seldom as good.
Bothy have a read about Vactan rust converter and the Dinitrol mentioned above. If these products as half as good as they look they will do a very decent job 👍👍

Funnily enough, only yesterday I was looking at some photos of that project after visiting our old friend Guy Ms widow. What a gentleman he was. We did a full Dinitrol underseal on a 2013 but if you want a report from someone we all know to give even Charlie a run for a pristine RAV, look no further than shcm. We got his RAV on the return trip from the dealer on a warm dry day and it went on like a factory finish. We had some quite good results with Tetroseal which is cheaper and easy to get inside box sections. Nothing I’ve come across beats Dinitrol but there may be some high tech stuff out there.

I have Lanoguard which if I ever get round to it, will be sprayed under the fire engine - mainly as it only does 5 miles a year. The Rav just bought will go to a place near Glasgow for a quote for them to do it. They seem to specialise in Dinitrol. Thanks all.

I had planned to use Lanoguard but after my fire engine was stolen, and then my health / mobility got worse, I decided to arrange to get a local Glasgow garage specialising in Dinitrol to treat the 2002 RAV4. They have now almost finished the work and sent me photographs of the work as it progressed. I'll attempt to load the pics....

Impressive The garage told me its one of the cleanest RAV4s they have worked on. Given its 20 years old, I kinda think its been garaged, plus looked after. I've never seen a petrol filler pipe behind the plastic shroud as clean!

Looks stunning Bothy  Did they manage to do the top half of the fuel tank as well as i think i remember you saying that it can rot on top as well as the underside?

Was the company that did your underseal/rustproofing called " Preserve and Protect" ? I only ask because someone on another website has booked an appointment for them to do some work on their vehicle. He said that they had lots of expensive and classics waiting to get done.

Yes - the garage is in Johnstone outside Glasgow. They have one part of the garage where they do motorhomes and the likes. The other bays they have are mostly cars. They have a good reputation, and the work is thorough. Myself and Stephen went along to see what they were doing and saw various types of cars getting the treatment at various stages. They have a good welder on site too. I think they are usually booked out for 4 months in advance.
