Hi,
I have a 5 dr auto 1999 Mk1 with a noisy transfer box. mainly in reverse on full / partial lock it emits a loud "clunking" sound. (I did source one from FCS Salvage at £350 - which has turned out to be as noisy as the one i was replacing - wont be going there again !!) Also a variety of occasional noises from the box going forwards. Various "engineers" have recommended that the box be rebuilt - no one seems able to recommend a garage / engineer that could take this on. From what I have read it is not a unique problem. i would be very grateful to hear of members views or recommendations - I'm in Dorset. Thank you. Dominic

These are well documented as having autobox ECU problems. 1. Drive it absolutely no more. May already be too late. 2. Await details from Davrav and Yanky Doodle Jamesy as to who reflashes them.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the ECU link. The actual auto is as sweet as a nut. The issue seems mechanical and the noise is in sync with the rotation of the wheels (if that makes sense). Also only on full or nearly full lock L or R in reverse. Noise disappears in forwards after 500 yds. Thanks again, i appreciate thoughts and advice. Have a good day, Dominic.

Might I suggest getting the driveshaft c/v joints inspected , as the noise you talk about sounds like driveshaft not gearbox related, especially as you’ve replaced the transfer box and the noise is still the same.

Hi Unclebob,
You may well be right thank you. This discussion has prompted me (belatedly) to talking with Chris at Haynes Motor Museum (Sparkford) on this issue. It is booked in with them in mid February for investigation and hopefully whatever is required will be affordable. Will keep you posted. Thanks for the thought. Dominic

Hi Unclebob,
Yep - have a look at their site, amazing museum in Somerset - massive collection of all the greats and they are all in working condition. Not a cheap option for me but I think worthwhile and they will certainly do the right job. Will let you know what they find / remedy and cost. Booked in for 11th February - will leave it with them. Thanks Bob, dominic.

Have no idea about the auto box, but I have a good knowledge of the transmission and manual box....all of which were massively over-engineered and well able to take 300bhp and more. The clutch being the weak point. As said above, I'd suspect CV joints/drive shafts although I'd be surprised. The rear diff mount was a weakness that caused a few issues with the diff canting back and forward...easily fixed by filling rubber mount with silicon. Stopped the diff rocking back and forward.

Thanks for that. What a membership !A real font of excellent knowledge. I will post findings once Chris at Sparkford (Haynes Motor Museum) has worked his magic. Thanks again, much appreciated. Dominic

Dominic Hi All, RAV is fixed. No noisy clunk from underneath !! Mark of Haynes Engineering & Restoration (Motor Museum) investigated and diagnosed the issue in a process of elimination over the last two months. The work primarily included replacing the cupped U/J joints with ones that can be serviced - unlike the originals - the originals were the cause of the clunk. A specialist engineering firm in Bristol took the propshaft in and fixed the new U/J's on. Other work included the transfer box inspection / change of oils and gearbox investigation change of ATF / filter and gasket. Also n/s CV joint. Not cheap but net of VAT £1378.00. RAV has never driven better !!

Couldnae co-relate “full lock L or R” with this type of noise if not a CV joint, so got that bit right. Just wonder if that was mibeez ALL that was required.....? Too late noo, but main thing is all fixeded and you are a bappy hunny, big bill or not.....lol.

Hi Big Kev,
Who knows......? At the end of the day all done and running very well. I was surprised to discover "wear" given it is only 70k miles - from new. Haynes reckoned that the drive system constant as all know, can produce excessive wear on U/Js. As you say happy bunny - with a slender purse !
