Mazda part owned by Ford at the time [dunno about now]. Engine is a Mazda design but produced in common plants and using some common Ford parts apparently. Fitted in a range of Ford cars too.

Ford divested fully from Mazda about 5 years ago but at one time owned 33% of Mazda. Rather perversely, although Ford had controlling interest in Mazda, it was the Japanese company that produced the power trains and platforms for cars like the Mondeo, the Probe and the 90s Fiesta which were famed for their dynamic abilities. Ford badges were of course fitted to the Mazda-sourced equipment in Fords of the time.

Mazda engines are pretty good Chaz. They are stand alone Mazda designs and Mazda tend to go for big capacity engines that are quite lazy, none of this tiny super blown highly strung business. Like many modern engines, they are almost exclusively direct injection. These are highly efficient but unlike port injected engines, they don’t wash the inlet valves with incoming fuel. Good fuel or Millers and regular oil changes are the solution. The newer MX5s have the new generation “Skyactive” engines in. That Ford engine in yours is not used any more. Chris, remember having a ride round in that CX3? The following day I followed you over the Kyber Pass!

It does get confusing with all the manufacturers sharing and swapping parts. One fella on the Honda Civic pages had a nasty surprise when heavily criticising Fords Eco boost engine and someone pointed out that’s exactly what he had in his 1.0 turbo Civic.

I thought your CX3 was a very comfortable ride, excellent finish and build quality and comprehensively equipped. It's a bit lower than a RAV but would make a good alternative to a 4.2 3 door IMHO. If I was in the market for a new(er) motor it would definitely be on my list.

Are any of them AWD? I don't need it really. I think that one has quite a lot of miles for the age and price. Nice car though.

So best get a test drive in the Mazda first and keep mentioning how short the bonnet is 😉 think most newer cars will be longer that a 4.2 🤔

It was the first thing I noticed when I first sat in a CX5, I didn't mention it, but my wife did ! Didn't really put me off, but on that particular car, what did put me off was the drivers seat height adjustment, for me, it didn't raise enough to make me feel comfortable and confident and I couldn't really see over the dash, especially when it had a heads up display also in the way. I'm only 5ft 4", but I was very surprised that it did not raise further. Some members on the Mazda forum mentioned that it may have been a faulty seat ! I would like try out the CX3, as it looks just the right compact size on the outside, as when I change, I'd like something smaller, but with the raised seating position compared to a normal car

Took the wife for a test drive and she wasn't enamoured - too much of a comedown is size and power compared to her diesel Volvo - but it goes very nicely, is spacious (in the front at least) and well equipped for a 'small' car ...
