I'm struggling with a manual these days due to rheumatoid arthritis affecting my knees and so I'm seriously considering changing to an auto. We are thinking of selling both the Rav and IQ and just running one car so I'm looking for a small auto hopefully with Toyota reliability but a little newer and the Mazda CX3 has caught my eye. I still like the thought and safety of four wheel drive and the CX3 is one of a few options to offer this. My question is , are they any good ? I know Anchorman owned one for a while and as far as I know Gus still does ? Thank you..

I went with my daughter to test drive a CX3 a while back. It was a really nice car and I would be confident of its reliability and build quality because it is a Mazda. Some years back I had a 323 GT and it was a brilliant car 94k miles over 4 years and it only needed routine servicing and normal consumables. Fast as f**k, handled fantastically and looked as good the day I sold it as it did when new. Good cars, Mazdas.

We love a Mazda in this house. Mainly because they look nice, drive well, cheap to run, great tech and reliable.
TBH though Mazda's auto box ain't the latest in terms of tech. IIRC it's a torque converter type gearbox used under license from Ford. You'd have to try it and see but i'd be surprised if it was up to modern dsg type twin clutch standards in terms of shift speed and efficiency. Although it might be a bit smoother doodling around town where the twin clutch systems can be a bit jerky.
I remember the boot of the CX3 being very small, it's not a big car.

Young Donald rates them highly. He suggested that model to Jamie a week or so back. Some Mazda diesels can get diesel going into the oil but Don would explain that better than I can.
I’m a little unsure if a diesel would be ideal for short journeys though ....
Let me know if and when you decide to part with your Rav. I may know someone for it. If you need a second pair of eyes to look at cars just let me know mate 👍👍👍

I was looking at the Mazda CX3 about 6 months back ...like you turning two on the drive into one and joined the owners club, very little seem to go wrong, the model with the bigger wheels skyactiv-g gives a harder ride, yet the 16" on the SE-L as a better ride but lower spec , get a test drive in both if you can 👍🏻 Not sure what price bracket\year you are looking at but I was at the lower end early stuff but had a rethink in the end. on Auto Trader 90 auto’s in petrol ..only 4 diesel, so if wanting diesel you’ll limited on choice 😕

He gave me a drive in his and I thought it very impressive.

Some Mazda diesels can get diesel going into the oil but Don would explain that better than I can. ..and me, but basically it's to do with the DPF regen. It's the result of producing the temperature rise required for regen by doing "post injection". Fuel is injected just after the main combustion event, resulting in some diesel being unburned and ending up in the oil. This can result in the oil diluting and level rising. Toyota's 1.4D does a similar thing, unlike the 2.2D which has the fifth injector.

Don actually suggested that Jamie look at the CX30 ... which, if you are in the market for a mid-sized, mild hybrid petrol SUV with the option of AWD, looks very tempting ... at a price.

It would get a thumbs up from me! I like the Mazda old school approach of a decent size engine coupled with torque converter rather than a small engine with a turbo and alternative transmission.
The prices look more sensible too compared with other manufacturers.
The Mazda 2 auto is one that I might go for next.

I had one of the first which had the 1.5D but the later ones have the 1.8 which I’m sure would resolve the power issue. I loved the brand and the car but it is built on a Mazda 2 and not a 3 so keep that in mind. It has the same torsion bar rear suspension so it can be soft and wallowy if you get any weight in it. The boot is tiny too but you can fold the seat and it does have a dual level boot floor. How much it dilutes the oil depends on what sort of journeys you do. It’s not peculiar to Mazda, most cars do it but if you do short trips you might need two oil changes per year. My only other real criticism was that it had very bolstered seats which im very sensitive to so double check that if it might be a problem. I’ve got tons of tech info if you need anything. It’s a gorgeous little car IMO. They’ve stopped selling it here due to import restrictions but there’s loads about. They do a 2.0 litre petrol version which is quite economical and very reliable as it’s so on top of the job.

This was it..... . Message to Admin: If Anchorman is going to show pictures of his motors, could we have a "brightness alert" that works in the same way as the spoiler alert?

Am I right in thinking the 1.5 and 2.0 engines are robbed from Ford ? Other way round Charlie. 2.0 engine in the MX5 is definitely a Ford lump it even has Ford on the engine block. What is that 1.5 diesel like ? Im still looking for a runaround and quite like the smaller Fords but I’m not going anywhere near that 1.0 Ecoboost as it’s a true grenade engine. 👍👍
