firemac Over here only essential workers who must use a vehicle were allowed to get their vehicles serviced or repaired at a dealer. Said dealer had to maintain a very high standard of hygiene and social distancing amongst their service dept. people. The need of a NZ equivalent of your M.O.T. was suspended as was our NZ vehicle registration tax.

Similar situation here although the fact that they were open for servicing meant that anyone could have their car serviced/repaired. I've done a bit of research since and it seems that a similar approach will apply this time - the garages will be open for servicing and MoT (unless individual firms decide to close, can't see them saying no to desperately needed income). It seems it will be unlikely therefore that there will be another MoT validation extension.

Possibly but I doubt it Chris. Honestly looking at what I’ve seen myself it just feels like people don’t care. Either way maybe this time it may be better with the colder weather and dark nights. Let’s hope at least we can meet family and friends on Christmas at least Same here in France but the shutdown was two days after the announcement, the reason for the delay was to allow all the legal stuff to be put in place, But we are starting to get stiff opposition, the non food small traders are complaining that they are shut, but people can still go to supermarkets and buy many non food items that they would normally supply, clothes, shoes, garden stuff, stationary, toys etc, to be honest they do have a point. As far as xmas i am afraid i am very bah humbug, i have no problem with families getting together for a few days for what should be a fairly significant celebration in the Christian calendar has turned into a massive commercial entity lasting two-three months, often forcing especially low income families into debt. My feeling is xmas shouldn't be mentioned or in the shops until at least 1st December, same with Easter, I remember going to tesco many years ago on 27th December and they already had easter eggs on the shelves. Just had an update to the France lockdown, due to the rebellion against small shops closing they have now said that supermarkets cannot sell non essential items. I cannot see that working,

Thankfully Baroness Moan/Lady Moan has won a £122m contract to manufacture 25m gowns just 44 days after setting up a new company - so proof we have equality in giving contracts to Scottish women Tories......I'm fair looking forward to my gown as my jammies are getting too tight. As I believe, in Scotland, the restaurants can re-open to serve food until 6pm like the cafes, but serve no alcohol.....so you need to get tanked up before going for a meal. Or carry a bottle in your handbag. As regards small shops....surely restricted numbers, sanitiser and masks would be safe. But if I understand correctly, VAT is now being/will be applied to masks, obligatory to wear them but obviously not an essential enough item to be VAT free.
Oh just looked it up.
There was a temporary change to Zero VAT between May and end of October, but I could find no news about this being extended, if that is the case you now have to pay VAT.
Yip....VAT now being charged so that way Boris / HMRC start clawing back the money they have wasted.

Personally I think that all this "saving Xmas" crap is just that - complete bo11ocks! What are we, frigging 5-year olds? Thanks to this 2nd lock down most folks won't be able to afford bloody Xmas! IMHO the economy trumps any holiday/festival. On a practical note however, the RAV's booked into my local Mr.T for an MoT and service on Monday 9th Nov. I wonder if they'll still be open? 🤔 Have to agree..... I think this lockdown may just stretch up to Christmas anyway. There are far to many who think the rules don’t apply to them or sod Ive had enough and will carry on anyway. The examples set by some politicians gives to many the excuse to do as they please. If it’s down to people following strict rules Christmas will get spoiled. I’m no big enthusiast of it anyway. To many folk spending money they don’t have on what in reality is crap. Andy is correct the final decision is subject to a parliamentary vote. But as they all agree why ? More stupidity. Went into Tesco early this afternoon to get some veg. There was an idiot arguing with a member of staff over him refusing to wear a mask. I had to walk away and say nothing as I don’t think I would have held my temper. They threw him out anyway. This is the problem. The “ idiot thick mongrel “ factor. The same “type” continue to board trains despite numerous signs and warnings of fines (which I’m not aware have ever been issued). Some when they see a uniform will square up in a confrontational manner as if to say “come on say something”. The virus will be here until they are over 60 they way things are going. We are all assuming that a vaccine is round the corner or it won’t mutate.

Apparently there were a few hundred protesters marching through Brum city centre before Boris's speech, shouting masks off, so we've got no chance of getting rid of it

I could well suffer some grief on here because of what I am about to post. But as someone born and raised in the U.K. and who lived there for 40 years I can't help myself, sorry.
To my eyes after seeing a list of all the alleged shops that will be allowed to remain open I cannot bring myself to agree that you are having what I would call a proper "lockdown". This "lockdown" is too little and far too late now. There are just far too many establishments still being allowed to open compared with what were allowed over here in N.Z. Yes I know we are much smaller population wise but you, like us, needed to go hard and do it fast. The U.K. Govt are I.M.H.O. an absolute half baked mess. They didn't have a clue at the start all those months ago and they don't seem much better today either. A sticking plaster is not going to mend a broken arm. Thank Goodness that lot were not in charge during the Dunkirk evacuation etc or we would probably all be speaking German today.

Its most odd....I can't get an appointment with my GP to get a D4 medical form completed for my driving licence, yet I managed to get an appointment with a private GP working at a driving agency, at only 4 days notice and the GP himself answered the phone! And charged £50 - half my own GP s charge. The GP I met yesterday said by taking simple precautions - mask; wash hands frequently; avoid contact - he has not caught the virus.

Just had an update to the France lockdown, due to the rebellion against small shops closing they have now said that supermarkets cannot sell non essential items. I cannot see that working, Their fellow Gaels of Wales tried that Dave.......fotal tuck up......lol. Apparently the French government are giving financial support to small shops to help them setup selling on-line. Also today i heard tbat intermarche which is one of the big supermarket chains are offering to help local bookshops who haven't any online service by allowing them to sell their books via the supermarket click and collect website, i am not sure if they get much out of it, the main argument is to stop all the trade going to amazon.

The crowds at open markets and queues at cafes and ice cream outlets on the coast of That England.....what effing lockdown......?
