Hi guys. I put my 08 RAV4 in for an MOT today and it failed on rear brake pads. Having put it in seven weeks early for the MOT, because I'm selling it, I'm already peed off with losing that time. My ire was compounded when they give me a bill of £128. I asked how much the MOT, they said £48. So they charged me £80 to fit rear brake pads, I'm not sure whether they're OEM. Is this a fair price, I've seen patent pads for as little as £13 on ebay. TIA

A garage is going to sell the pads at retail and add the labour. They've got to make a profit to stay in business. 👍 I'd be very wary of pads at £13 on eBay. ECP quote quality branded pads starting at £53 for the rear axle set. Assuming your garage used quality pads, your £80 fitted seems a bargain!

Honda charged me £73.45 for a MOT and rear wiper blade. On top of a service for£246.04. The receptionist was then rude ! So your experience sounds good to me!

I just replaced the rear pads on my car a 2013 4.4 diesel with Brembo pads (£43) and fitted them in a couple of hours and I’m anal about cleaning and greasing everything really well... Pads from ECP £43 delivered 👍 Edit. Didn’t see you’d had them done. I’m struggling to work out why your selling ?

I pay £40 for an MOT and do the servicing myself. I get the booked stamped ..... A standard or intermittent service is little more than an oil and filter change. I know a fitter who works at a main dealers in Worcester who tells me they often don’t even change the filters if the cars haven’t done full mileage between services which have to be annual as you know irrespective of mileage. Some may think it’s wrong how I’m doing it. But be assured anything I do is done properly using genuine parts and gets checked by a top tech...... Dealerships are mongrels plain and simple .

Thanks so much for your advice guys, it's made me more relaxed about it. 👍 As to selling my car, I bought it in February and six months later, I've driven it just 350 miles. It's just a waste, guys, I love it and it should be driven.

They were incompetent too or underhand- phoned me and said there was a problem with a wiper blade and would I like them to fit a new one. I said I would normally do it but I suppose it would need to be done to pass the MOT. He wasn't sure !! But would I like the other front one done at the same time? I agreed. Came off the phone and immediately checked the MOT status online - it had passed earlier! Paying the bill and discovered it was actually the rear wiper. Not good - and that wasn't why I fell out with them!

On eBay you want to see that the pads are OEM and a good brand name, I sure the garage would have used a reliable product as they are fitting pads all the time, they don’t want a customer coming back with poor or squeey brakes . Labour time is fair so time to move on if you are selling the car 👍🏻.....are you replacing the vehicle with another ?

Not only do I intensely mistrust garages I mistrust the clowns that work in them and the main dealers are worse. I know some of the stories are subject to exaggeration but I’ve heard way to many ones with good genuine grounds and your one David is another. It’s nothing short of deception and I would be taking them to task big style.

Labour time is fair so time to move on if you are selling the car 👍🏻.....are you replacing the vehicle with another ? Thanks for your advice, Bob. No I'm not replacing the car, as I absolutely detest driving and abhor the drivers of today. They, not all I must add, just make the car go forward. My wife drives me to work, that's why it's only done 328 miles in 6 months. My wife has my old 18 plate Yaris, so she's not interested in taking it over. On the subject of garages and servicing, do they check the brake pads as part of a service? When I bought the RAV4, I got it serviced immediately, they never mentioned that the pads were nearly useless and possibly dangerous. I asked them to do a thorough service. As I took on board advice I got off the forum at the time, about timing belts/chains. This made me think yesterday, did the pads need changing at all? Would they deteriorate that much, after only 328 miles?

Pads should be checked during a service but if the wheels never came off they might not be able to see them. With the pads you've just had changed you could alway ask to see the old parts. New pads have around 8-10mm of material, to my mind an an ex mot tester 3-4 mm would be an advise to the customer but it’s all down to the testers discretion.

What mileage is the RAV in question? My '08 is currently on 133K miles and has only had two or, at worst, three sets of rear pads since new. That being said, the car is driven regularly so less prone to the disc corrosion that contributes to higher pad wear.

It's done 88513, davrav. The last MOT mileage registered was 88126 in October 2019. So you could be right, only being driven 387 miles in a year, could have contributed to the brake pads condition.

Yes there is usually another side to the story but I don't need to exaggerate - there is a lot more to my tale but I can't bear to think about it! I may take it up with one of the directors I know but I will probably just move on. Literally 5 minutes before I encountered the receptionist I had been thinking about buying a new Honda - well they can stick that sale somewhere dark and dank !
