The plug-in hybrid form of the RAV4 is getting closer ... It looks as though it launched on 8th June in JapanThere are pre-release notices in the US and there are various US previews on YouTube. I quite liked this one: and his follow-up here: The performance specs are currently embargoed in the US but I note that the pre-release material quoted an EV range of around 40 miles (was 39 miles, now 42 miles) while the Japanese specs quote 95km (aka 59 miles) which seems a little odd ... I guess that I'm just getting impatient to find out that I can't afford one!!!!!

There's been quite a lot of pre-release hype on the internet for this model. Looks very interesting and has a 5.8 second 0-60 time; seriously quick SUV.😊

I didn't know until recently you could tune exhausts and gearboxes 😕 Exhaust is just a pipe with baffles to me , and as for a gearbox... it's just a lever for gear change.

Best not look at the Eclipse Cross PHEV soon to be available then Jamie

Way to complex for me. Way too pricy as well..... Cars are becoming horribly complicated. Way too pricey - probably ... EVs tend to be ATM. Prices in Japan are from 4.7M yen which translates to ~£35.5k; prices in the US are from $38.1k which translates to ~£30.7k. If it arrives over here at those sort of prices I'll probably have one; if it comes in closer to £50k I won't ... Hence my interest in the UK release info ... ("no pockets in a shroud" and all that) The RAV4 PHEV isn't uniquely complex - it has a pedal to make it go, another to make it stop and a turn'y thing to make it go around corners ... seems simple enough to drive to me. Daily, weekly and monthly owner maintenance checks are routine enough - I'd have to remember to plug it in occasionally, and fill it with petrol rather than diesel, but I can probably manage that. Annual servicing will be carried out professionally by Mr T just as it is with my diesel - I can't be faffed with trying to do that myself. OK, 'infotainment' systems on all modern cars are way too complicated but I'll only have to crack that once to get it set-up the way I want, and I'll get used to all the safety nonsense within a few weeks (or switch it off) but that would be the case for any new car that was worthy of consideration.

They say tow rating is higher, but it is different here (in the UK from the US), so if sensible it might be an option when it comes to it, again, depends on the price.

And of course... better mpg than my Ec.

Or, maybe, I should consider a Suzuki Across available from this autumn as described by Autocar and Auto Express amongst others ... This will be the largest SUV in the Suzuki range and come as an AWD, plug-in hybrid ... it's a Suzuki styled and badged RAV4 PHEV! This all seems a bit weird to me ...

Platform sharing - they're all at it. It's a little more than platform sharing - it's pretty much the same car coming off the Toyota production line. Suzuki have announced pricing for the Across - from £45,599 ... see cars.suzuki.co.uk/new-cars/across/ (and scroll down 'til you find it) Meanwhile, Toyota have introduced the Black Edition to the RAV4 2021 line-up and tweaked some specs and prices across the range ... but there's still absolutely no sign of the PHEV ... Still glad that I didn't wait!
