Nice car - really jellyus now! nuts and bolts....the type of material tend to play a part re the interaction or whatever they call it between one type of metal and another. The steel screws on my fire engine rust where they are in contact with brass..so I am slowly replacing them with brass where possible. The steel....if you go for stainless steel, is that the right metal to provide the strength (ie are they more brittle but less prone to corrosion?) I got hold of a lanolin based rustproofer that seems easy to use and effective (Lanoguard)that needs applied a couple of times a year but not had the time or the health to spray/paint under the fire engine. Cheers Bothy there is THIS one still available if you are interested Talking to my brother today and he said he's got plenty of nuts and bolts suitable for the rear step They’ve got several fresh 3 doors Rav’s on their site today 👍🏻

Some are early 4.2 autos so the dreaded gearbox gremlins could be waiting in the bushes! Those would need careful research before buying

I've noticed that, Bob. Some are early 4.2 autos so the dreaded gearbox gremlins could be waiting in the bushes! Those would need careful research before buying Wonder if their personal warranty would cover that ….or say no deal unless the gearbox computer in changed . Our first RAV was a 2002 4.2.0 and the box went AWOL at about 90K miles. ECUtesting reflashed it and Warranty Direct paid for the job, less the policy excess. I don’t know if WCVC’s warranty would cover the work bearing in mind that unless you were aware of the problem and knew that the gearbox ECU could be reflashed for a reasonable sum, taking the car to a mainstream garage or Toyota dealer would result in sucking of teeth and a quote of up to £3K for a new box. Would WCVC’s warranty T&Cs cover it? Best check if the car has already been reflashed and if not, move on and buy a 4.2.5.👍

I keep looking at that silver XTR they've got and thinking, "Hm, maybe as an investment........" THIS one Jim

As for the earlier Rav auto gearbox issue been under warranty, how would they know it hadn't already been done and telling potential customers it had?

Back in the good ol days, I'd buy a turbo MR2 with front end damage and grab the engine etc. Beginning to wonder about buying rotten RAV4 and transferring the engine and generally good gearbox into something which isn't sporting a rotten underside. The GG boasts a 6:1 compression ratio 6 pot engine using 6mpg and an advanced (it has a pudding stirrer gear change lever) crash gearbox developing at least 12hp.....wonder if the 4 wheel drive transmission train could handle 127hp ? Bedford axles maybe originating in the 1930s I'm told....although never had much problem in the 300 miles I've driven with it over the 5 years of ownership!!

One other factor - the wife. If she found out I'd paid that amount when I paid the same for my 63 plate Volvo XC90 I'd be living in the Green Goddess !

You might need about a 5:1 reduction box between the engine and gearbox to get the revs down and the torque up a bit Ian.
Amusing story ( I don't think I've told this one before on here ......... but at my age! ) Anyway, I was bought up on the south side of Birmingham and our local fire station was at Kings Norton, on the Pershore Road. Outside the station the road was 4 lanes wide with a service road for some shops on the opposite side. When there was a call-out the driver got into the cab and started the Bedford engine. He held his foot to the floor whilst his mates all got aboard and opened the doors to the road. Pulling away involved letting the clutch in with the engine revving as fast as it would go, probably about 2000RPM. The appliance would lurch forward and then amble through a left or right hand turn depending on where they were going. I suspect that the appliances were just about on their last legs as this was the late 1950's and they had received a fair amount of abuse during the war. Then the M1 opened and the world went mad! The Midland Red bus company , amongst others, wanted to run busses on the motorway to London and believed that they needed vehicles that could travel, fully loaded at 100MPH ( I said the world had gone mad ). That dream didn't last long with the imposition of a 70MPH speed limit. Rolls Royce were left with, if I remember correctly, quite a large quantity of 12 litre ( supercharged? ) diesel engines which were to power these coaches. A deal was struck with Denis, the commercial vehicle manufacturer and they put the engines into a new design of fire appliance. One of these arrived at Kings Norton. On the first callout the driver forgot that he wasn't driving a Bedford and got into the cab, floored the throttle and set off in his usual way! The vehicle shot across the four lane of Pershore Road, over the footpath on the other side into the service Road where the driver managed to stop it before it demolished the shops on the other side! I've no idea if they proceeded to the fire immediately or walked back to the station for a change of underwear!
