As we PXd our previous Rav David we just had the one driver (Chris) bring the latest Rav up from Devon. He wore a mask and anti-bacted the Rav before we got in it for the test drive, and we did the same to the old Rav for him. He took ours on a test drive while we were out in ours. When we were satisfied he phoned Jim the manager and he took payment over the phone and did all the paperwork for us including the private plate transfer. The V5 arrived in a few days and they even sent new number plates for us which did get lost in the post so we went and got our own and Jim reimbursed us the cost of the new plates. He also refunded us one months road tax as they didn't get the Rav ready for the beginning of the month as promised. Only issue we have is the drivers side main window switch was broke which Jim promised to replace and so far hasn't, it works but is loose in the holder as the plastic brackets are broke so have used small screws to hold it in for now. :TU:

It sounds good apart from the switch that I hope is soon replaced. I still have some plates on retention so may be able to use them again but I would sort that myself once I was sure we were keeping the car.

Been meaning to join for a few months ... finally a bout of insomnia coincided with enough patience to fight the registration process! I must be getting old!
Technically I don't own a Rav-4 ... My wife bought a beige 02 reg 3dr nrg auto (4.2.0?) in early 2019 ... I took the gearbox ecu out when the box started behaving erratically after 3 months and sent it away for some replacement components and re-flashing - apart from a recent issue (cured by changing the auto gearbox oil and filter) it's been really great ever since.
In mid 2019 my daughter started learning to drive (again, this time opting for auto) in it. She liked it so much that she bought a p reg 3dr auto (4.1) in early 2021. The only issue was (and still is) a clinking sound when manoeuvring on full lock (salesman thought it might be CV joints, but had taken it as a trade in and didn't know the model). I suspect it's the middle clutch not releasing the 4wd so the wheels can turn at different speeds - it is not present when manoeuvring on soft surfaces.
Other than the fuel consumption being painful and the E5 fuel being silly money, it's a great car- and for £800 with less than 60k miles on it, an absolute bargain (though it needed 4 new tyres straight away - one must have been the original spare as it had almost full tread and a 96 date code!).
Hopefully she'll pass her driving test (when she finally gets to take it, booked in June, December is rapidly approaching!), though I don't know if she'll be able to afford the insurance or the fuel ...

Welcome Piers, you are certainly in the right place for RAV's, and I expect Bob may comment on the NRG's in the future. Ainsley

Big welcome to the club Piers…and may I say a great choice in RAV4 models 😉 👏🏻👏🏻 You found the weak spot in the NRG’s gearbox ECU, rest of the car should be reliable …just spray some underseal around underneath, in any areas looking rusty .

Thanks very much for the warm welcome from all of you!
They do appear to be good cars ... I had considered a 4.3 when my 06 reg CRV failed its mot last year (kind of glad I didn't given bigkev's tale of woe) ... given it was the third year of failing due to front suspension parts needing replacing and an expensive injector issue making cold starting very troublesome just as the weather got colder (on top of a 4 year old aircon computer fault that resulted in an inoperative system that flashed but refuses to provide error codes!) and 150k miles, perfectly timed with redundancy ... it was time to say goodbye. Sadly available funds didn't cover anything like a 4.3
My (actually very competent and trustworthy garage) took it for the price of future goodwill and wouldn't even let me pay the bill for the mot. Good job I really do trust them (my wife did the legal advice for them moving premises a few years ago when their landlord wanted to sell their old building for redevelopment and they found (unfortunately 5 miles further away) a larger garage for sale). The garage owners son (it's a family business) managed to get it back on the road and sell it (he's still driving my father-in-law's 54 reg Zafiera that he fixed the gearbox in - we really do trust them (or are gullible fools!) ;-)).
Thanks for the advice Bob, I'll ask my daughter to have a look (I'm too old and knackered to do much under car work tbh), and most likely end up crawling around on the floor in an attempt to pass on some knowledge!
My daughter really wants to keep her 4.1, but is a bit worried about the running costs - it uses E5 fuel and does 18-20mpg (all short runs). If she was rich she'd be keen to look at electric conversion (is that a 4 letter word here?), though I suspect a bit of tlc for the engine (whilst the car's off the road whilst insurance costs drop - it's only ~£350 with 2 years no claims whilst still learning, but will shoot up when she passes) will help restore the power and improve fuel consumption.
We'd planned to buy her a project car when she turned 16 so she could learn properly, but we didn't have the money, time or energy to. She still wants to learn though, and we're not even 7 years late yet!

From experience both the petrol 4.1 and 4.2 RAV’s are reliable but the rust bug can get to them all in the end….more so with the 4.1. On paper the 3 doors makes no sence , tight on boot space, high road tax and average MPG. …and a rav4 as a first car will be a killer on insurance , our last blue Rav4 3 door I offered it to my daughter some years ago, insurance was more that the cars value of 4K😳 Think being an enthusiast helps…I love mine 😉

My Faithfull Rav4 is now in Sri Lanka and I now have the new 2022 Toyota Aygo X Exclusive. As muched as I loved it, I just simply did not need a big 4x4 anymore, especially a diesel.

Hi. Recently bought a 2002 auto. What symptoms or things were happening when you said the auto box was behaving erratically? Thanks
