I went from my 2.2SR 'conventional' Automatic RAV4 to a couple of Citroen DS's with Robotised Self-Changing Semi-Automatic Gearboxes. There is no doubt the RAV4 gearbox was better than the Semi-Automatics But having said that, once I worked out the foibles of the Semis and how to get the best from them, they were a nice drive. (but given the option between the two .....) Agree, David. You can't beat a good TC automatic. As you say though some non-traditional modern stuff is pretty good. I found the CVT in the 4.3 petrol really close to a TC box. On the other hand, Toyota haven't had the best experience with the MMT box in the Aygo and VAG have had real problems with their DSG box when mated to their smaller capacity engines. I have had 3 cars with a torque converter and I liked/like them all (Subaru Legacy, CRV, CRV). I had a Mk2 Prius and that had a CVT - didn't like the engine noise when I accelerated hard but it was okay with driving like I had all day. Honda Jazz that was better than the Prius but a 2016 model compared with 2009 (I think) so things move on. I think CVT is the way it's going including in the new Civic so probably I will end up with one at some point. Following Charlie's comment about the iQ I saw an Aygo with MMT but I think that would cause problems for my wife jumping from the CRV to the Aygo and vice versa. So back considering an MX5 - seen a cheap one with electric hardtop.....

The Aygo was a hash of a car being a shared partnership with PSA...... As Don and Bob have said in the past only buy a Japanese car that is built in Japan.... Sister went against my rather stern advice and bought a Citroen C1 with the MMT box.... Car has been a right royal pain from day 1......... Best auto box I’ve had was in the Jag XF... Amazing box with imperceptible changes and stunningly fast reactions to the pedal.
