...2013-2018 Rav4.
According to poll in the Daily Mail.
Q3 second, Mitsubishi ASX third.
Good result.

Another reason to stick with Toyota.
But I've never had a cvt gearbox 🤔
Is it one variable gear ?

I had a Mitz ASX - nice car and ran well. I think I found the handling a tad odd after having run RAV4s for many years.
The auto transmission on my 2014 Volvo XC90 is ok but I think known for being a bit lazy when launching at roundabouts. But having bought it last August, I was disappointed to have to replace a plastic pipe on the turbo when it fell off; and then repeated dash warnings about gear selector service required (an electrical fault which didn't affect driving but bldy annoying and intermittent which means an eventual replacement required). Aye - I miss the Toyota reliability....recognising that some here have had more than their fair share of faults.

Another reason to stick with Toyota. But I've never had a cvt gearbox 🤔 Is it one variable gear ? Effectively, yes, Jamie. But modern CVTs have gear "steps" built-in in order to give the characteristics of a torque converter (best option) auto. Some work very well (the 4.3 RAV was an example) and some not so good. That's why I'd want to try the 4.5 auto if I was tempted to buy.

It'l take some getting used to.

If I were buying a new RAV4, it would be a petrol or petrol/hybrid and if it came with a CVT box it wouldn't worry me at all

If I were buying a new RAV4, it would be a petrol or petrol/hybrid and if it came with a CVT box it wouldn't worry me at all Same for me.... Five years ago I wouldn’t have entertained a CVT box but the one in the wife’s IQ is superb. For Jamie who is not used to auto boxes it won’t make any difference drive wise cos he isn’t an auto driver yet.... CVT Boxes give better fuel economy than a conventional torque converter box. The gear changes are engineered into the electronics which retard the ignition to give the effect of gears changing. The unfamiliar wouldn’t know which box was in the car. Wife’s IQ gives the same MPG as my manual box one and that runs on fumes.... Not sure if I ever mentioned that ..... i prefer a conventional automatic box and I do and have always loved auto boxes. Only exceptions being sports or performance cars where they are............Well just wrong.

Heard of torque converters , as a side subject... What does it do ?

Heard of torque converters , as a side subject... What does it do ? Simply, Jamie, it's a fluid clutch that sits between the flywheel and the gearbox in a traditional automatic. A CVT doesn't have one but relies on a pulley arrangement instead. It transmits the turning force (torque) from the crankshaft of the engine to the first motion shaft of the box. Because it's a fluid coupling, it can allow the engine to idle with the box in gear (but you do get a bit of "creep" hence the need to keep your foot on the brake when stopped). Modern ones are generally very good. Certainly much better than the robotised clutches on some current cars which can be very fragile and unreliable.

I went from my 2.2SR 'conventional' Automatic RAV4 to a couple of Citroen DS's with Robotised Self-Changing Semi-Automatic Gearboxes. There is no doubt the RAV4 gearbox was better than the Semi-Automatics  But having said that, once I worked out the foibles of the Semis and how to get the best from them, they were a nice drive. (but given the option between the two .....)

Fiat use a semi automatic so called Robotic gearbox in their Motorhomes .. It was without doubt the very worst auto box I’ve ever driven. On the MF forums the reputation for catastrophic failiure takes some believing !!

I found the CVT in the 4.3 petrol really close to a TC box. On the other hand, Toyota haven't had the best experience with the MMT box in the Aygo and VAG have had real problems with their DSG box when mated to their smaller capacity engines.
