Hi all I have an issue with my brakes which I cannot seem to get to the bottom of, there are three symptoms, which may or may not be related.
Occasional granchy sound from front (possibly rhs) when stopping from a slow speed, I initially thought that it was a disk pad that had worn unevenly and was rubbing on the disk, I have now taken the front brakes apart on two separate occasions and found no problem.
The next one is harder to describe, again it only happens occasionally (maybe once a week) I think it is the ABS triggering prematurely, but it is not the rapid hammer type sound that I usually expect from ABS being activated, the only way I can describe it is like someone is plucking a spring, you get a sort of boing boing boing sound, probably 2-3/second, if you release the brake and brake again it is fine.
I recently spoke to a mechanic who replaced the front shocks for me , and he put it down to the shocks being knackered causing the ABS to be triggered if the road is a bit uneven, but it has done it a couple of times since then.
Squeaky brakes when reversing after car has been parked over night. I recently took the rear disk/drum combo off on both sides and cleaned them and readjusted the handbrake this did not solve the problem.
I replaced all the disks, pads and shims about a year ago and they are all in good condition, it has also just passed its CT (french mot) without any mechanical issues.
The car brakes in a straight line without any problem, even when I get the boing sound, as I said I have taken the brakes apart on several occasions and been unable to locate any problem.
All suggestions welcome Regards Dave

Broken spring possibly? They often fail near the tail and it's not always obvious.

Tres etrange maw nammy...... Hi Thanks for the reply, I have just had the front shocks replaced so any problem with the front springs should have been spotted, also the sound is too high a note, I agree the only springs that I know of related to brakes are the handbrake ones, but there is no reason for them to make a noise under normal braking, and I had the rear disks/handbrake drum off to clean and adjust them for the CT (MOT) and they both looked fine.
Personally I still think it is connected to the ABS, maybe I can get someone to check the onboard computer for any error codes, it is always annoying when you have a problem that you cannot reproduce, I must remember next time it happens to look at the dash to see if the ABS light comes on at all when it is making the noise.
Noises are always a pain, when they only happen when you are moving, they often appear to come from somewhere totally different, once my brother spent a week off and on trying to locate an intermittent rattle that appeared to come from the front nearside, only to discover that it was his roof Ariel tapping against roof bars.

Dave, how are the rear suspension springs? The very aging retired lecherer has a point there, Dave......rear springs on yours, and wife’s, VERY susceptful to snapping. Kingo warned me that copies do NOT seat well, so bought Toyota wans for wife’s car.

Hmm, just found this. When you get this noise, how many times per wheel rotation do you get it? Once or more?

Hmm, just found this. When you get this noise, how many times per wheel rotation do you get it? Once or more? Hi It is difficult to say but I wouldn't imagine it was any more than once per rotation, I have never had it happen at high speed, usually 20-30mph, probably no more than 2 boings /second, my first reaction is to release and reapply the brakes which stops it happening, it is also usually within a couple of miles of the first journey of the day when the car is cold.
Next time I will try and not react and see if it continues if I brake harder and until the car stops. my gut feeling is that it is still something to do with the anti-lock braking system.

Are there any dark patches on the rear discs?
