Mrs P arrived home last Friday saying she could hear a noise coming from the back of the Rav especially when she was slowing down. So we have been driving it round all weekend but the noise didn't happen, then she said she thought it might have been the spare wheel cover so she pushed it back on as it did seem loose I had a look at it and it does seem that I can't get the two clips at the top to click in place so it is a little loose, so any ideas on how to get a better fit??

There is a trick to fitting these, Paul. It's all about how you hold your mouth when putting it on .
Seriously though it is quite awkward because the cover is really flimsy once it's off and you need to handle it carefully in order not to damage it. I used to find that you need to take it right off the car rather than try to force it in to place in situ. Remove it and then line up the two indentations at the top of the cover with the corresponding items on the back palte. Then you have to feed the cover on around and down bothe sides of the backplate making sure that the top hasn't shifted out of place before closing the clip over at the bottom. Once you get the hang of it, you do wonder why it was a problem but that confidence only comes with practice, I'm afraid!.
Also make sure that the NVH pads inside the cover are still intact as they tend to deteriorate over time and fall off which can generate a rattle. I found that you can easily fix them by cutting up a sponge into appropriately sized strips and evo-stick them to the inside of the cover. I used to also use a little padlock to keep the securing clip closed and provide a little bit iof security (although stout pliers would have cut it off).

OK thanks Jim I will give it another bash but there did seem to be a bit of a gap at the top so perhaps those pads have fell out so will look at making summat to replace em :TU:

But even without them, the cover should stay in place. It's just a very rather awkward fitting but you'll get it with a bit of patience. What you need to watch out for when fitting is the cover's inclination to go inside the edge of the plastic backplate rather than around the outside. As I said, it's a bloody flimsy thing with a mind of its own!!

The outer shell fits on the outside of the in black cover all the way around, if it’s slipping inside the lip at the bottom it will seem too big at the top, other problems the lugs on the top have broken and not deep enough to slot in ..or the latch is broken at the bottom . Could remove the whole cover and backing and fit a soft cover off eBay...think of the weight you will save 😉

I've struggled with mine in the past and found it easier to put a small mark with a permanent marker so I knew if the lugs were aligned at the top.

I had already suggested about taking it off all together and even showing her Ravs without the cover on but she doesn't it and doesn't like the other covers so will have another go at it, but I must admit I was doing the bottom catch up first as I thought that would help keep it central and align the lugs?? The Blue Ravs wheel cover went on ok I thought compared to this one?

As has been said, the pads on the rear part of the cover can age and loose all effectiveness. Toyota sell them still .... Only around £50 for the set :TU:
(I went to check the price a few years ago just in case they were a reasonable price and my Dealer actually gave me a strip of padding they use FOC!)

Exactly the same on our 4.2 took ages to figure it out. On ours the two lugs on the side are broken and it came like that. We’ve left it as it is for now the idea with the sponge sounds good as it can be pretty loud especially on the cobbled roads we have in places. Good advice Jim
