Hi all, I am new to posting on this forum, I have read many useful posts on here while owning my RAV4 but never posted, so taking this opportunity to say Hi also. I currently have a RHD 2008 RAV4 T180 D-CAT. Unfortunately my dual climate A/C doesn't work as it should, as explained below; - The passenger side works as normal, it delivers both warm and cold air as requested.
- The drivers side does not work as normal (this is a RHD vehicle). When requesting warm air it only delivers extremely cold air.
This is becoming more of an issue for me in the UK, as the colder weather starts coming in, especially for the frosty mornings when I need the demister. The car has been re-gassed and this has not resolved the issue. I have taken it to a garage who have completed diagnostics on it and two faults came up, which are as a result of the driver and passengers side light sensors. However I was informed that this would not impact the issue described above. I have also completed the diagnostics for A/C on this forum and the codes don't point me in the right direction. After reading several posts on here and others forums, it appears to be down to two key issues, either the heater box is faulty (which I believe can cost roughly £2,000) or the servo switch is faulty. Now my understanding is, if the servo switch is faulty this would appear as a fault on the diagnostics, which it is not. I am hoping someone could help me try resolve this as I am not willing to spend £2k on a £4k vehicle. If the above issues as I understand it are wrong, please tell me, I am open to suggestions or resolutions. Thank you in advance. Jack

I had this issue last year - fortunately just before I could no longer extend the warranty. It took almost three months to resolve, primarily because the Toyota parts catalogue for the 2008 D4D was incorrect and, consequently, incorrect parts were repeatedly being sent to the dealer. The fault was caused by a 20p plastic diverter flap in the heater box that had broken [initial diagnostics indicated the servo unit and then the servo controller but that wasn't the problem - the flap had broken at one end and jammed] Repair involved a strip out of the dash and centre console and replacement of the heater box. Something in the region of two days work and £2K. If this were to happen to my RAV again I would be tempted to strip it out and fix the flap - especially as I had the same problem about 18 months from initial ownership from new so this was the second time. I wish you luck.....

Spent close to 5 hours last night pulling my dash out to find the electrics all working perfectly but not the white heater box. Very frustrating to think I could simply glue the part together if I could easily take it apart. Thankfully I have found a second hand heater box on ebay for £100; got it going in to my local garage to be repaired. Hoping to keep costs below £500. Will update this post as I get more updates. A photo of the offending part would help others down the line. The flaps are visible once the box is out. Some silicone grease on the hinge pegs of each flap before reassembly may well be worthwhile to help prevent future failure of the same part. Edit: And thanks for cheering me up with that weather report Oh, and :welcome: .

Did I mention? On the RAV4 production line, they start with heater flaps and then build a car round them. To remove the heater flaps, simply reverse the assembly instructions......
........unscrew the rear mudflaps and place them to one side.

Have a similar problem. i cannot direct the air to the screen demist. Took out panels and air cushion on drivers side to discover that the servo motor was operating correctly. However, The gear it is supposed to drive, along with the connector rods to the flaps were missing !! Does anybody know if replacement parts are available (even after market) ? Toyota Main Dealers stated 'New heater box' at £1200 !!

:welcome: to the forum. If you fill out your profile it would be helpful. Is it possible that the missing parts have dropped inside the heater box? Maybe a look see with an endoscope? I doubt very much that relevant parts would be available anywhere other than Toyota. I'm guessing your best bet would be a salvaged unit.

Got a good mechanic whose going to replace for a small fee. Will post images when it’s apart.

Hi all,
Quick update on this subject.
Heater box is now fully functional. Cost in the region of £500 for parts and labour. Whole dashboard had to be taken out and the original heater box replaced with a second hand part.
We took the original box apart to see why it wasn’t working and it wasn’t 100% obvious. We believe it was the heater matrix, which is a cheap fix but still required the dashboard to be taken out. To avoid any misjudgment the whole box was replaced.
Sorry no photos 😞

Well done for persevering and getting it sorted and thanks for the update. Were all the 'flaps' in the old box intact and moving freely? On mine, one was broken at the hinge point and, consequently jammed.
