Not sure how the previous owner/owners never came across these. I was looking at the Cortina yesterday and noticed the front passenger seat had a slight bulge. Naturally it made me curious so I’ve put my hand in from the top of the seat (already ripped) and fished out a small file. It’s got loads of service invoices and MOT’s from 1990-2005 from a Ford dealership in Essex. Looking at the invoices and MOT certificates the mileage has been really low I’ve rthe years the highest being 2000 miles. Love to know how they ended up in there but a pleasant surprise for me and hopefully a slight increase in the value of the car too. 😊

I love it when something pleasantly unexpected like this happens. Nice one, Ash!

Rule of thumb with an old car...lift out the back seat and see what you find under there 👍🏻👍🏻 Have you got a few more photos of you Cortina 👍🏻

I’ll get some of the interior and engine bay next time. I absolutely love the sloping dash and it really is the best thing ever. The only downside is having to pulling favours from people to help with mechanicals. Next couple of weeks all the paint will be removed back to bare metal and ready for paint. 😊

One suggestion though, when you get it resprayed, weld up the wing mirror and aerial holes. Those wing mirrors are awful INMHO and you can get a better window-mounted alternative for the aerial which is just another rust trap. End of lecture. Hope you get lots of enjoyment out of it. :TU:

I’ve found an awesome looking retro looking head unit as the original is an AM/MW radio which I will have fitted its DAB and plays from Bluetooth so hopefully keeps the original appearance but more up to date so no need for an aerial on the exterior. The DAB aerial will fit on the windscreen so the original will definitely be going

Does look very tidy Ash and the GLX trim looks so much better that the base model 👍🏻 That was the hay day of my motor trade days, common problems front ....suspension bushes, rear axle void bushes, welding to the outer sills and chassis box sections ...has it got the ‘pinto’ overhead cam engine fitted ?

Mine was a 72 1600 with the Pinto engine and twin choke Weber carb. It could shift but had the BW autobox so was just a tad thirsty! Bob's right about the suspension bushes, I remember having to do the fronts and the outer ball joints. That was fun! Loved that car though....

It’s had a complete rear axle according to the paperwork I found. Looking at some of the previous mots at the last mot before it was parked up it had advisories on all the bushes you’ve mentioned. The skills are all free of any welding and all original it has got some bubbles in places but nothing major. The worst parts are under the front wheel arches where they meet the body there’s really small holes there but hopefully not a major job and on the passenger side lower windscreen area there’s some bubbling there and yes it’s the 2.0 pinto engine Bob.

I understand the point about rust, but I would not get rid of the wing mirrors as I reckon they will be original. The biggest "mirror rust" issues was when the trend changed from Wings to Doors (think it was something to do with some rule about being adjustable from the cabin?) and the manufacturers just drilled and screwed in cheap mirrors into the door skin and the rust started from pre-delivery. The wing mirrors are also a lot better for rear visibility compared to door mirrors.
What might be worth doing is getting rid of the side strip fittings (I am sure that would be fitted by being fitted into drilled holes) and refit using something like 3M VHB Tape instead.
