Have you tried the document number on the front page of the V5C rather then the V5C/2 section?

Yes it’s inconvenient...Could it be done at the post office as they read the bar code 🤔

Trying to tax a car with the green slip but it’s aakimg for a 12 digit document reference. The only problem is the number on the slip is11 not12. If you mean "the green ‘new keeper’s details’ slip (V5C/2) from a log book if you’ve just bought it" then the 12 digit Doc Ref is on the green shaded section 10 labelled V5C/2W ...

Tried all the numbers I think the V5 is an old one as the previous owners had the car since 2004. Tried the section 10 too Phil. Will pay a visit to the post office in the morning. Another thing I found strange is they don’t ask for the insurance details. I remember previously you had to show your insurance at the post office. When we bought the 4.2 I taxed it with the green slip and there was no mention of the insurance check. Cheers anyway guys

Cheers anyway guys All checks are done on the system (as in the records are kept on a big database) and if the car have insurance and MOT you can pay. It will not allow you to proceed if there is no record of them.

The V5 is pre 2008 so can only be done at the Post Office. Interesting fact every time the V5 is updated an extra digit is added to the document t reference number according the DVLA lady I spoke to hence why it’s 11 digits and the most recent are 12 digits 😊😊So off to the post office shortly.

Good info Ash 👍🏻👍🏻 Although maybe a little confused ... I have a 2013 V5 of the new Red style. The document reference number on the front cover has 11 digits. The document reference number on the ‘new keeper’s details’ slip (V5C/2) - the green shaded section 10 labelled V5C/2W - has 12 digits, and that is the information that you'd typically need to tax a newly acquired vehicle before you have the new V5 from the DVLA. For what its worth, the 12 digit reference number on my ‘new keeper’s details’ slip (V5C/2) is a '6' followed by the 11 digit reference number from the front cover!
