OK so the Rav will be leaving us tomorrow so no more four wheel drive, but the little Yaris has got traction control but how good is TC does it work in snowy conditions etc. I've never driven a car that's had it so can't comment meself so would like to hear your thoughts if you wouldn't mind. :TU: Also the auto box has the letter B at the bottom of the selections for breaking this is used apparently when going down steep hills so it doesn't overheat the brakes?? would it be any use in snowy icey conditions??

Traction is more often referred to on Jap cars as ESP or electronic stability programme . You Rav will almost certainly have had it. ..
The B position on your new car i bet is something you will never use. Wife’s wee IQ which runs on fumes has it. It’s never been used not even once.
IQs run on fumes. Did I ever mention that ?

Traction control is good to have but you will probably never need it or notice it!
The B position can be used to provide some “braking” when going down hill instead of using the brakes. I think it will add energy to the battery to be used as electrical energy later on. I think the salesperson is getting a bit carried away with the saving the brakes from overheating concept! Like Charlie says you may never use it - I certainly wouldn’t worry about it until you are completely used to the car. With a manual transmission some people will change down to a lower gear when going down a steep hill - I do that and I believe it helps maintain control but I also tend to change down approaching junctions because I am of an age that I was taught to do this when brakes were not as good, then police drivers were taught not to use the gears to slow down but to only use the brakes, and this then became the method that instructors taught learner drivers. The point is that unless you have flappy paddles you can’t just change down a gear in a car with automatic transmission so you can’t get this “engine braking” so Toyota give you the B position to provide this effect. I hope this makes sense!

Toyota traction control (esp) is very good. Had it on previos Avensis, and it was only noticeable on frosty days... it keeps the car strait, with no noticeable effect.

I must admit I thought that traction control, like ABS, was pretty much standard on modern cars. And of the RAV it becomes quite noticeable as soon as you start trying to ascend really slippery slopes - it works in conjunction with the 4WD system in order to get power to the wheel(s) with grip.
What you really need on any car, especially a FWD car, in snowy and icy conditions are cold weather tyres (or good all season tyres). It might be interesting to learn what comes with the Yaris as standard ...

Thanks all sounds a bit creepy ESP When we picked it up earlier the dealer went through all the functions the Yaris has even setting our phones up for us to come through the no hands thingymebob but he didn't mention the TC or ESP so I asked and he said that the Yaris is pretty good in snowy conditions and tehTC or ESP can be switched off if needing to get more power to the wheels so we will have to see how it goes as it is now with us
