Yesterday morning ( Saturday ) and I'm away to the supermarket at 06.40hrs. It was raining, thank goodness, and the visability on the road in the bottom of the Aire valley was bad enough for the sensor to switch on the lights. Did the shopping and drove home, parked on the drive and realised that despite the indicator light on the dashboard being on, there were no dipped headlights. Both headlights off? What on earth is causing that? All sorts of complicated causes going through the small part of my brain that functions at 07.30hrs on a Staurday morning.
Any way, it stopped raining during the second half of the afternoon so I decided to investigate.
Both fuses ( seperate ones for each headlight ) are OK, the relay seems to be operating OK so I'm beginning to panic a bit. Anyway, sense prevailed and I checked the bulbs. BOTH had failed. I know they were fine last Monday when I set off at 05.30hrs to drive to Devises so they either failed together or very close together. Statistically the liklihood of that happening must be miniscule - but it did happen this time. I suppose the lesson is, always check the simple things first, no matter how unlikely!

I had fitted 'night breaker' previously, and they went within a week of each other. Yours had a better timer in them...

Been in use for about 6 years as far as I can remember Dave. Have refitted the originals as a tempoary measure but will definitely be getting another set of Nightbreakers unless anyone has any better ideas(?) I like the very "white" output rather than the faintly yellow/orange of the originals.

As my nightbreaker lasted only a year, I decided to go th Philips way. Jury is still out on lifetime, but light output is good (similar to nightbreaker). M.

Thanks for that - I'll investigate Phillips then. Is there a particular version that you bought?

I went for the 'WhiteVision' as this is the brightes HB3 size from them. Life span on paper is longer than 'Nightbreaker'.

Thanks Jase - I'd just found that review when notification of your post arrived. My brother owned an electrical wholesale business before he retired and he really rated GE products ( - and technology ), almost certainly on the basis that they generate less complaints/returns. It's tempting to try them, do you know anyone who is using them?

Chris , I’ve not tried them myself as I’m still using the ‘Nightbreakers’ which must be four years old I guess now.....

Having run the Nightbreakers on two sucessive cars, have fitted the GE Megalight Ultra 130's to the RAV dip beams. Have to say, they are pretty impressive on a short nightime test on the local lanes. Not just as white as the Nightbreakers perhaps but a very nice even illumination of the road right up to the cut-off point. Still got Nightbreakers in the main beams, but they get very little use. Thanks for the leads guys :TU:
