Hi
This is for those of you that might be interested.
I regularly carry a wheelchair in my RAV4 as my wife need to use one from time to time, dumping a chair in the back is always a pain as it takes up room and moves about so I made a heath Robinson solution, to be honest I originally made it for our Mk1 Scenic, then modified it to fit our MkII scenic, and changed it again to fit the RAV4.
As we rarely carry more than one passenger in the back I made it to replace one of the rear seats, as the seats just clip in, it is easy to put the seat back if I need it.
Like a lot of things this was just a prototype with the intention to build a more professional version, maybe one day I will get around to it.
I made it to hook onto the seat mountings and I made it in two parts so that the hooks could be opposing to lock it solid in place.
I then used rubber straps originally intended to hold a sailboard mast to roof bars to secure the rear wheels.
Then a long pin that I thread through the front wheels to hold them in place.
It is a little bit fiddly to feed the chair through the rear passenger door and strap it in but quite doable.
I am a bit dubious how it would stand up to an accident but I am sure that it would fair better than just having the chair loose in the back. I really ought to rebuild it in metal rather than bits of chipboard and plywood, between the modifications I have made to fit it in different vehicles and the last change was due to this new wheelchair being wider than the old one, it is getting a bit tatty.
As I said this is just how I got around the problem but thought I would pass on the idea in case anyone else has a wheelchair problem, but build and use one at your own risk.
