My 4.3.5 with 145,000 miles on has developed a loud(ish) rattle at idle. If I blip the throttle it gets louder and then settles as the revs drop. When I press clutch in, the noise goes. Is this release bearing? Or DMF? I’m aware that it’s a big job and i’ll be looking at clutch replacement and probably DMF whilst it’s out. I also expect the bill will be sizeable.

sounds a bit like it Dominic ( a big welcome by the way )but I think an Anchorman opinion is needed here. Have you had a look underneath when it's at idle just to make sure that things like the exhaust heat shield are not the problem? ( that would be a much cheaper "cure"! ). DMF failures on the 4.3 seem VERY rare but if the clutch has to be changed your approach seems the most sensible. Do you tow with the RAV?

Thanks Three. I was on the forum before.I’ve signed up again as the forum did not recognise my username. My profile pic is/was my Rav on a beach with tailgate open.
Yes looked underneath as I have a knock from the backend, which I have found. No heat shields loose, I have had that before and resecured. I have maintained my Rav myself from new, and know it inside out. Deffo feels like release bearing or DMF. I can’t tackle the job myself as I don’t have the time really. I assume at MrT i’d be looking at £1800 for the job? Less at an Indy, but there are not many I trust.

It’s a normal noise on those boxes. Some do it more than others.... It’s not the usual same pitch groan a thrust bearing gives.

I believe Don would tell you it's got something to do with it have double selector shafts or giddlepins or............ something.........

Yep, i’ve Had it from new and it’s always been noisy, however it has suddenly got louder the last few weeks, and there is a definite metallic sound to it now over and above what used to be there.

I’m assuming this is a diesel with a 6 speed box. Everybody above is right. Nearly - twin countershafts Dave and I kid you not, the first time I came across them was in an ERF! They either have to be timed to perfection or the easy and perfectly acceptable way is to back off the tolerances in which case they chatter on each other at idle but work perfectly well under load. Have they become noisier? Well provided your ears aren’t playing tricks (with respect, once your ears tune into something, they have a knack of amplifying with astonishing results) there are several possibilities. Firstly, if the oil is low, it will get noisier because the damping effect has gone. If the oil is hotter than usual it may do a similar thing. The gearbox might be knackered to put it mildly. If it’s never been done, you could change the oil. You MUST use the genuine straight 75 grade oil which is like weasel pee to start with. It takes 2.1 litres from memory but two full litre bottles is fine. Drain the oil into a spotlessly clean container and look at it. It normally comes out quite clean and a little cloudiness is fine. If it comes out proper filthy or full of bits, there’s your problem. If it’s quite clean and no bits, just start it and let it idle for 30 seconds with no oil and see if it gets worse. If it does, fill it up and stop worrying. If it doesn’t make any difference, you can turn your attention to that DMF. See if the bite point is the same and if you can feel it rattle under your foot. As stated above, faults with the DMF are rare but so are faults with that 6 speed box. Almost unheard of actually. Unless you have clear evidence that either is faulty, I really would crack on. I would let it develop to a point that you can positively identify it because you can spend an obscene amount of time and money chasing your tail. This all depends on it going quiet when you press that clutch pedal.

One last thing. Just see if the front crank pulley is tight while you are underneath.

When our 4.3 went for its last MOT it was making a noise when ticking over and when the clutch pressed it went quiet. I honestly don’t know what they replaced it was done under warranty last year and it’s been fine since. I’m not home at the moment but will check the paperwork when I’m back tonight.

Yep 2.2 Diesel with 6 speed box.
Gearbox and Diff oil have been changed at 40k intervals by me with genuine Toyota supplied oil. Last change was 20k miles ago and the oil was nice and clear and not black in anyway, no swarf at all.
I know what you mean about hearing noises, but know this car inside out and I'm sure the noise is louder than before. The drive train also sounds noisy when driving. The noise goes when the clutch is pressed. Bite point is still the same on the clutch, and no slip either.

You can listen to the box with a mechanics stethoscope or a long screwdriver pressed to your ear.
