First figure is magnification (makes far away things look closer, unless you're using them the wrong way around). Second figure is diameter of lens (objective lens) at the big end (not engine related). The larger this one, the more light gets in (bigger collecting area) and the brighter the image subject looks (but does not actually improve intelligence of the subject). The bigger the magnification, you'll probably need a bigger objective lens diameter for acceptable image brightness. The question is what do you want them for, do you have the neighbour's permission & if not, how do you intend staying out of court? Seriously, don't go for big mag if you can't stabilise it and don't need it. That's the basics, but there are probably lots of cleverer stuff these days. If you can be arsed see: www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/birdwatching/choosing-bird-watching-equipment/how-to-choose-binoculars/Don't ask me about what to buy. Actually some of the RSPB field days can be good for trying out a few, as suggested. They generally sell decent-ish optics, but can be more expensive than buying from a web seller. I've got some crappy zoom ones you can try.

I have a brilliant pair of 'autofocus' 7 x 35s from a brand named Jason. Not made any more - I believe they were bought out by Bushnell, from whom I have a very nice pair of 8 x 42s that will focus down to about 2 metres [very popular with the lepidoptorists]. The former pair are great for medium distance, the latter for close to medium. I also have a vintage pair of Canadian Naval night glasses at 7 x 50. They weigh a ton but I can see a pimple on an elephants bum at 500yds if I can hold them still enough.
As said above, mucho dependo on use.

Cheers David......offer put in on ebay on the ones you linked. They are for general purpose and those Bushtucker ones seem to bit the fill fine. Thanks Andy......deffo do NOT want mega magnification......have tried some in past and near got bliddy seasick with mobile image. Last year a tourist chap let me try his Zeiss ones to look across Moray Firth.........good bliddy grief........could see up an oil rig's kilt in Invergordon. At £1300.00 I was shocked they were incapable of making toast too........

Magnification and lens sizes is only pert of the story. The quality of the optics is absolutely paramount. I have rifle scopes with the same numbers but the best one with the best optics picks out details the others just can’t . Honestly I can see a squirrel blink and count it’s eybrows at 75 yards . Scope is an EB Sniper with svaroski optics.
I have some binos in the loft Kev give a a few says to find them and see if they are good or not. Can’t remember which ones I kept..

UPDATE.......that well known afficianado of most things ebay put me on tae these Bushnell 10 x 42 things, which I won on Sunday at 18.45 and received yesterday in the am post.....proves it can be doned, mins, even to my adoptful home here in 40ft. Lorryland. (Jase.....The Artic.....see whit ah did there....?)
I was surprised to have to pay £103.00 for them and they were actually hotly contested up to an Ingleeshman's nightmare....£100.00 threshold.
Anybody considering a pair of binos should look into these.......pun.......they are utterly brilliant with excellent optics and a strangely steady image. My "Japanese" wans from That China about to become optical frisbees. Cheers as usual, Davrav.

The 15 x 50 sounds like unreasonably high magnification for hand held binos but the IS bit of the model number stands for Image Stabilised ( similar to a camera ). This makes them very usable when bird watching either on land or from a boat. They are a bit on the heavy side but give a crystal clear, sharp image even at a couple of miles if the air is clear. At close quarters ( 10 - 50m ) they are equally good. The IS is switched on/off by a button operated with your right index finger and is powered by 2 x AA batteries which last ages. There is a mounting thread for a ( photographic ) tripod built in.

Image Stabilising must be a necessity richt enough, Chris, coz them is powerful magnificators......lol. Only YESTERDAY did I decide I was going to invent binos with motorised barrels and a memory function. Saves all that bliddy readjustment when ye let somebody look through your glasses, and they obviously adjust to their eyesight and pitch. Anyone wishing to invest in my new invention just send me money asap.
