Daughter No2 is now looking for a car but her partner wants a diesel. So what is happening to diesel cars?? I know Toyota are ceasing making them and there will be some extra penalty charges in city centres etc, but can anyone give any more info :TU: We went along to our local Audi dealer, as that is the make of car she wants and when I mentioned to the sales bloke about diesel engines he sort of made out that there was nothing going on. Anyway the car daughter No2 likes is a Q3 S line I think it was and it had a diesel engine but I think I put her off because of the diesel engine.

Much discussed subject Paul.
For me I don’t give a monkeys. I would still buy one but the price would have to very low as residuals have collapsed. Buy one at the right price and take advantage of the media driven blight diesel cars have. Do not buy a new one unless heavily discounted . Several manufacturers have said they will stop building them so offer peanuts cos they are such a poor investment.
My car is worth bugger all now despite it’s done just 24K miles and is still absolutely mint. So for now I sit on the fence .

Oh ok Charlie cheers :TU: It would be a used car Charlie and she was looking at a 65 plate which was just under £24k with 17k on the clock so I haven't a clue about prices. The sales bloke was also pushing for her to have PCP which again is new to me so never had a clue but seems you are only sort of renting the car for four years then can either buy it or exchange for a later model, seems loads of people are doing it these days?? Sales man at Toyota was also trying that with my other daughter with the CH-R but she was adamant about buying it outright.

I do not know prices, but 'wisebuyer' is a free web that gives you at least an indication. As for pcp, my opinion, it is always cheaper to buy outright, except if they offer you an incentive. When i got mine i took pcp as they gave 1000gbp, but i made sure i can cancel when i want and buy outright. I had to make one payment, and canceled the next day, thankyou very much for the 1k....check there is no penalties in paying in full.

To me PCP is a con invented by the Merkins to support their dwindling auto industry, the issue as I see it unless you want to stay on the payment treadmill you're never going to be onto a winner. Okay you get yourself a brand new car but after paying your money for 2/3/4 years you have nothing to show for it, whereas if you take out a personal loan at the end of the term you at least have some collateral in the shape of a car. You also have to be wary about the mileage, the ploy is to get you to sign up for a 5K a year deal as the sales guys who are on commision say it won't matter if you go over, but when you hand it back they then try to charge you 8p a mile for being over the limit.
As to diesel versus petrol, currently there is a lot of talk of things happening, but nothing apart from levies on new cars has actually happened from what I can see.

I would never take PCPs... If I can’t afford to buy I don’t

There's nothing fundamentally wrong with PCP. It's not a 'con' though you certainly do need to understand what you are getting into. And it may be a good if not the best way to finance a new car. Certainly if I were to be upgrading to a shiny new 4.4 AWD Hybrid Excel this week I would certainly take the current PCP deal. First I'd negotiate my discount on the list price which would give me an effective cash price to be paid. So for a cash purchase I'd pay that amount upfront and drive away in a new car. The current 24 month 0% PCP would allow me to take away the car and pay off exactly the same amount over two years - meaning that I could leave my money in a "Post Office Account" earning interest in the meantime so that the PCP deal would actually turn out cheaper for me. But I agree with Charlie - I'd never buy something that I couldn't afford ... but that doesn't necessarily mean that I'd always pay for it upfront! And, with diesel prices currently a tad depressed, now seems an excellent time to buy a diesel - a Euro 5 / 6 diesel engined car would seem to represent pretty good value right now ...

There has never been a better time to buy a used diesel. Just be sure to pay bugger all for one as they are now worth just that.
Is there anything wrong with them ? Absolutely not. It’s just the media driven hype fuelled by politicians whom I would not allow to clean my boots talking rubbish.

It’s strange that all this talk about diesel cars and not about diesel vehicles. I doubt you can buy a petrol van now although Nissan make an electric van.

Paul.......me same as Charlie.......could not donate an intercourse.......love my diesel car and would have another, but........Audi....? They will never EVER get involved in deep discounting because they have such a great view of their tonsils coz their heids are so far up their bums. Plus if this is the daughter who has or intends to make you a grampa.....best check the boot of that GROSSLY OVER PRICED VW TIGUAN........it is utterly tiny. Can see the point of the much roomier Q5, or if she deals drugs get the Q7...... neighbour bought with her eyes recently a 14 plate Q3.....two weans at primary school and a wee dug.........asked me aboot roof boxes t'other day as parents are miles away and cannae fit stuff in it.
Two neighbours just bought nearly new Kia SUV fings........utterly stunning and wipe the flerr with Audi prices. Audi mechanic dog walker also replacing air con condensers VERY REGULARLY on A4 and Q3, even some Q8 he tells me, so mention that if she decides to spend EXTRA money on a marque whose reputation become rightly soiled by parental group cheating......lol.
As for the negativity aboot PCP........if you intend to buy outright and not RENT the car..........it works absolutely fine. Main loss is when you trade back in and get tempted "up the tree" or become subject to same model price increases and updates.

Stonking point, Keefster.........was behind a school bus the other day, driven by Sean Connery who thought I was a Russian agent pursuing him. No need for that massive smoke screen he was trying to put me off with..........black as the space of aids it was.........but my Rav with nearly perfect emissions every time, is demonised by rectums.

Thanks for the replies folks, It's great to get these little snippets of info that i'd never otherwise know about so will pass this info on. :TU: I didn't like the sound of the PCP deal meself as it seems even if you keep the deal going every few years you are left with a big payment at the end and possibly no car. Kev-I did mention the Kia to her as we have a main dealer down the road from us so that might still be a possibility :TU:
