Hello everyone.
I have a 2005 mkII 2.0 D4D XT-R with 140,000 miles on the clock. This is my first diesel car so I am not all that familiar with common faults and problems.
I have had this car a little over 3 months (just out of warranty!!).
Last weekend I drove from Plymouth to Scotland, approx 500 miles. Before leaving, I performed all the normal checks and found the oil level to be very low. So I topped it up with about 2 litres. Upon starting the engine there was a puff of white smoke from the exhaust. I thought maybe this was just condensation in the exhaust pipe as it was a cold night.
The car ran fine for most of the journey. Checked oil at regular intervals and all seemed fine. About 40 miles from my destination the turbo began to make a nasty whining noise. I was on a bridge and didn't have a safe place to pull over. Coming off the bridge at the other side I lost all power. By the time I got to a safe place to pull over there was a thick cloud of white smoke coming out of the exhaust.
I suspected the head gasket, but the coolant level looks fine and there is no oil or anything in the header tank.
I inspected the oil level and it seems to have gone through the 2 litres I put in! Could the white smoke be burning oil? I thought burning oil was black smoke?! If I switch on the ignition now, even from cold, the white smoke starts immediately.
I was just inspecting the engine to look for oil leaks, no sign of oil leaking anywhere around the engine, or underneath, but when I took the intercooler off there was oil inside the intake pipe and the pipe that runs from the intercooler to the turbo. I'm guessing this is not normal?!
Is this likely to be a turbo issue? If so does anyone know how easy it is for a novice to try and fix / replace the turbo? I can get a new unit on e-bay but don't want to buy one unless I'm sure this is the issue.
Looking through the paperwork it seems the last owner had the turbo refurbished just over a year ago. Recently I also had a problem with low oil pressure due to sludge in the sump blocking the uptake. Not sure if this is related... the car appears to have been serviced regularly.
I'd like to try and sort this myself if possible to avoid hefty garage fees, so if anyone has had a similar experience or can offer advice on where to start that would be much appreciated!
Cheers!
Matt
