Hi all,
A few months back my garage said my engine was smoking under load and there was an oil leak from the intercooler. I had seen white smoke from the exhaust from time to time but thought little of it.
Anyway, my garage replaced the intercooler and intercooler pipe back in April 24 and all seemed well.
A couple of weeks back we did a round trip of 300 miles to Wales and back and didn't notice anything untoward.
However, a week ago on a 15 mile journey, after driving about 5 or so miles, the white smoke was back on acceleration. About seven lots in total stopping after around 12 miles. On the way home one plume and then nothing.
The following day nothing on another 15 mile journey.
A week later a twenty mile journey and two lots of white smoke at about 10 miles but nothing noticeable on return.
Yesterday on a twenty mile journey, it smoked twice after 1 mile accelarating up hills in third. Then another five or so times accelarating in either 2nd or third stopping after around 15 miles. And nothing on the return home.
Nothing today on a 15 mile journey either.
When it happens it always seems on acceleration but as the history shows not all the time.
Any suggestions welcome.

Hi and welcome! You'll have to fill in the details of the model, engine, year and maybe mileage before anyone can come up with anything helpful.

Thanks Chris I've done a bit of that in the title but this should complete it.

Welcome. Have a read here: www.uti.edu/blog/diesel/what-causes-white-smoke-from-diesel-enginesYour garage diagnosed an oil leak which would usually be indicated by blue or black smoke I would have thought. Maybe you need to visit a diferent garage... EDIT May be worth cleaning the EGR valve to rule out any sticking of the valve mechanism.

Thanks davrav the link suggests oil or coolant problems can cause white smoke (though I've never noticed the coolant reservoir dropping). If they can't fix it will have to take it elsewhere I guess.
Looking at the original investigation it was to:
1) Investigate an oil leak from the turbo to the intercooler pipe. 2) On smoke testing the intake system they found a large leak from the intercooler "itself".
They recommended replacing the intercooler and pipe - but hedged saying it was not certain to fix it. Though it did for a few months at least.

Toyota RAV-4 D-4D XT-R AWD Estate 2.2L (2231cc) Diesel 2010 Mileage 92k Sorry, should have also asked what your driving profile is like? i.e. do you do mostly urban journeys, drive back and forth to work each day ( how far? ). Do you ever do long distances and motorway driving? My first action would be to check the air filter followed by cleaning the EGR and MAF sensor. These are all easy jobs to do yourself. I'm sure there is a post somewhere on the Forum that describes how to clean the EGR.

Thanks Chris,
It's usually a twenty mile there and back once a week or so. So I get up to 50mph on these trips - but the new 20mph zones do cut in quite a bit.
Otherwise its six or so long motorway journeys a year and a local shopping trip one a week.
All in I don't do more than 8k a year.
Not sure I'd have the confidence to take bits off the car - I did car maintenance at school and we put the carburettor back incorrectly on the science teacher's Morris Minor - it wreaked havoc with their fuel consumption!

Does the car.
Use or spit coolant out of the header tank spout.
Use or burn oil if so how much ?
Use more diesel than it should….
👍👍

I'd say no - levels don't go down, no - oil still showing max, and no - 37mpg which is a little under what carcheck says should be urban consumption of 37.7.
It was back in the garage today. All pipes okay but they suggested it might be oil getting in the turbo and what I think is white smoke might be wispy blue/grey.
They road tested it and couldn't get it to smoke. However, when I drove it home no I could no probs! The anti-midas tiuch.

Hi Chris, I'm in West Oxfordshire. Hi Fella, I've a daughter who lives in Grove ( Williams GP? ) so I could enquire of her if she ever used a good independent garage when she had her RAV 4.3 if that would help?

Yes thanks Chris it may well do. The garage I'm using is recommended by others but they're hard to pin down on what to do next.

Former Audi tech here, usually what you are describing, smoke on acceleration and intercooler full of oil indicates a bad seal in the turbo. I’m surprised someone replaced your intercooler and didn’t look at the turbo throat though I suspect one is considerably easier to do than the other..
