Hi,
Newish member here, first real post.
A bit of back story…
I’ve had my 2005 4.2 2.0 d4d for almost a month. I changed the oil and filters (all 4 of them) and put some system cleaner in the tank. None of the filters were in a particularly good state, the fuel filter especially was full of gunk. When trying to fill up the new fuel filter with the pump, I was pumping forever, I checked to see if the filter was seated properly, there was no fuel in the filter whatsoever, so having checked on here, it seems the diaphragm may have gone, I used a syringe and tube, as directed on here and have been running it for a good couple of weeks with the new tank of fuel and cleaner in there.
Yesterday, with the needle reading halfway between 1/4 and empty, the car just stopped…
Recovery said that there could be air in the system from the broken diaphragm. Is this a possibility?
I’ve been looking to get a new fuel filter housing, but prices of almost £250 for this are putting me off, although if I have to, I have to.
I was just hoping you guys might know where I might be able to get a new 23380-27122 fuel filter housing (which I think is the correct part number.
Any help would truly be appreciated.

How about checking the fuel filter head to see if the valves are visible ? It may be a bit of muck in the valves causing them not to seal resulting in the pump not working ?

Just throwing this out there but......is the gauge reading correctly? Thanks for the suggestion and it’s one I thought about… I can’t remember how many litres I put in to fill it up last month, it was just over £69.00. The tank was probably around where it was halfway between the 1/4 and empty. I now have about 15 litres in there for definite. 5 from me and 10 from the very nice Mr Recovery man and the gauge has moved. I think I’m going to try taking it down to the garage with my son following me… can these AWD’s be towed? I know the recovery guy wasn’t that keen on it… Have you heard of the air leak from the fuel filter housing? I think I read something about it, but I’ve read so much now, I don’t know if I’m imagining it…? Thanks for the quick answer, too!

How about checking the fuel filter head to see if the valves are visible ? It may be a bit of muck in the valves causing them not to seal resulting in the pump not working ? So if I take the fuel filter off from the housing, and look at the filter, there will be a big central hole and loads of holes around the edge, where you can see the actual filter. Are those small holes the valves (you might be able to tell, I’m not a mechanic…)? It wouldn’t surprise me, the mess in the one I took off was pretty appalling… perhaps I’ll start with that at the weekend. As I’ve asked davrav, have you heard of the worn diaphragm in the filter housing to cause an air leak? Thanks also, for your help and quick reply.

No , the valves are in the filter head , the part with the primer that the filter screws to..

I should know but I’m not certain but my understanding is you cannot tow your car. The MOT testers don’t spin the wheels when testing they use a deceleromiter so be very cautious ..

No I wouldn’t. I used to take my car for its MOT to a garage in Worcester where both testers are Toyota master techs, They wouldn’t put my 2013 AWD on the brake rollers. I use a local garage in the village close by now and they won’t use the brake rollers either… Im not entirely sure the above closely relates to towing the car but I’ve always believed it’s very inadvisable not to tow either my car or my previous T180… To be fair though I’m not certain 👍👍

Thank you to all those who gave ideas and pointers.
I’m hoping I’ve sorted it…
Not sure how to put photo’s on here, but took the fuel filter housing off and apart, all looked relatively clean.
I took the heating element out and the amount of ‘guff’ in that small chamber, was incredible, so, I’ve cleaned that out, cleaned out all of the valve ways, and reassembled and I’m now standing next to a running car. I’m going to fill her up and won’t let it go below 1/4 tank, just in case there’s a load of guff being pulled though, but there wasn’t anything in the fuel filter, so hoping it’s not too bad.
By the way, the diaphragm is working well. Not perished. I almost spent out £300 on a new one from Toyota. So I’m very happy with that!
Right, off for a test drive in a mo…
Thanks again!
