im having trouble with my 2007 rav 4 d cat , it was losing power dramatically espeicially at traffic lights etc , as if it was in limp mode but no warning lights , it would then pick up and i found if i kept the revs up at stops i could get by . i decided to change the deisel fuel filter , this greatly improved things no more like limp mode but not full power at times espeicaly going up hills when over the hill it seems to kick start into action whithout increasing the throttle i can here a sucking noise and whoosh off she goes at vastly increased speed , any help would be most appreciated

thanks for posting chris, yes i only do short trips 8 miles to work , i have used redex fuel system cleaner in the past but not regulary,i will have to look at the pipes but not sure which ones to look at, thanks again for your help Diesels don't like short journeys where they don't warm up properly. For 8 mile trips the EGR valve ( Exhaust Gas Recirculation ) is probably open for much of the time so there is likely to be a carbon build up in the inlet manifold and combustion chamber. I had similar symptoms where my 2008 model failed the MOT test on emissions one year. I took it to a local ( very good! ) diesel specialist and they cured it with an "Italian decoke". This involves working the engine fairly hard at 4-5000rpm. I'd be tempted to do the same to yours BUT before you do:
1) Change the oil and oil filter, check the air and fuel filters 2) remove and clean the EGR and the pipework as far as you can reach. I used carburettor cleaner to do mine. Check it is operating properly by plugging in the electrical connection and switching on the ignition, the valve should fully open. ( don't start the engine! )
3) fill it with some decent quality diesel ( NOT supermarket fuel ) and add some additive such as Millers Diesel Max
3) find yourself a decent hill a couple of miles long and, with the engine properly warmed up, drive it up the hill in 2nd or 3rd gear at 4-5000 rpm a sufficient number of time to get rid of any traces of black smoke from the exhaust
If that works, change the oil and filter TWICE a year, steer clear of supermarket fuel and use the Millers with every fill. Repeat the uphill runs periodically if there is any sign of smoke from the exhaust.

That's probably the nearest I'll ever get to a compliment from you, you, you youngster! Please can I have the bits back that our mutual friend removed from my car when I last saw him?
