I noticed today with the rain the auto sensing wipers are not working. I’ve tried adjusting the delay timer too but still not working. Any ideas of what the likely cause maybe?

Presumably the wipers work if manually switched Ash?

Has the string broken that goes around the screen and through the cab?

🤣yes guys wipers are working and it’s been raining quite a bit on and off today. They work fine in the slow and fast settings but when you set the stalk to auto just get the 1 wipe and that’s it. It was actually working fine last week when it was raining so not sure what’s happened.

Ash have you tried flicking a few drops of water onto the sensor ? My ones are ultra sensitive so doing that should bring the wipers on… To be honest I never really use auto wipers or lights. 👍👍

It was actually working fine last week when it was raining so not sure what’s happened. Very occasionally my auto wipers don't, but only first thing in the morning after start up and the windscreen is quite wet, but it's no longer raining. On those occasions, sometimes they'll kick in when I come off the drive onto the road and then they're fine. Sometimes I need to switch them off and then back to auto and then they work fine. IMVHO, auto wipers are fine in theory but on many cars they seem to have a mind of their own. They are the ultimate answer to a question that no one asked (after keyless start).

Yes I’ve tried that one Charlie and still the same will work on the slow and fast setting but on auto it’s just one swipe. Like yours it was really sensitive prior to this so always had the time delay on the slowest speed. Ill have to book it in to Toyota I think see what they say

Managed to get them going, my son was cleaning the car over the weekend and whilst cleaning the windscreen not sure how he did it the sensor has a notch on either side and one of them had come loose just pushed it back in and working fine now. Big relief was really frustrating me.

While the way the rain sensor works should take account of ambient light levels, my own circumstantial, unscientific evidence, makes me feel they are affected by sunlight. You get one of those days which is bright but drizzle or heavy showers driving into sunlight and I feel they don't work as well as they should. They seem to work much better at night! (very basically - They work by detecting the amount of scattered infra red light being reflected back to the sensor -> light which the sensor has emitted. Rain on the screen affects the amount of light that gets reflected back to the sensor).
I've never worked on a rain sensor design. At one point in the past there was talk of incorporating the rain spot detection into the driver assistance camera to save money - no point in having both camera and rain sensor if you can do the job with just the camera.
