Hi all,
Really need help on this intermittent issue.
Some history. Clean non wrecked 2010 6 cylinder about 160k miles. About a year ago it had codes and we replaced the charcoal canister unit. Since then all good. Then my wife both in the car drive 20 miles. Park to switch drivers and the car will not start. No dash power at all. It was like we had no food at all. We had power to the seat motors no issue. Held the fobs close to the start switch. Nothing. We had it towed to the dealer. They have it overnight. It started for them no issue. No foul no charge from the dealer. Now a few months later getting charcoal canister codes again. Few weeks after that, still have not replaced the canister, but other than no cruse control or traction control, the car works fine. Few weeks, now the air bag idiot light is on. Few more days... Same issue again no dash, cannot start. Few da response from the keys. Borrowed a car and I went out a few days later. Running and drive great. Airbag light is off and the lights caused by the canister codes are coming and going. Ready to burn this car. Cannot let the wife go further than the local sore due to fear of being stranded. Wife loves this car, it's in great shape and wants it fixed! Appreciate if someone has done this dance and can help! Thanks! Nick

Hello Nick. What part of the world are you in? Presumably this is a petrol car of some kind. Is it a RAV4?

Is the battery in good condition?

Welcome! This is a UK forum (primarily) and we have never had the 6-cylinder petrol RAVs here - so you are unlikely to get a response from someone with first-hand experience of this problem. It feels like an intermittent electrical fault - that much is probably obvious - there may be more than one fault here but dodgy electrics could give rise to bizarre symptoms. Can you clarify the normal start procedure for your car? Specifically, do you have to depress the brake pedal before pressing the start button to start the car? And, does the car have separate Accessory and Ignition On positions? We know that there is primary power available from the 12v battery - the seats can be adjusted happily. But a need to depress the brake pedal might suggest a faulty brake light switch or issue in the brake light wiring. In this case an intermittent fault could cause the car not to recognise that the brake pedal had been pressed and thus refuse to power-up the car ... just a guess ... Obviously there is scope for an intermittent fault in this area. What do you mean when you say "no cruise control or traction control"? Do the functions not work or is it that there are warning lights showing? It is 'common' for the 4x4 light to come on in conjunction with the engine management light - but this does not necessarily indicate a specific fault with the traction control system. Cruise control is 'cancelled' by pressing the brake pedal - so it might be possible for an iffy brake light switch or wiring short to produce the symptoms of both the not starting and no cruise control - but maybe that's a bit of a stretch ...
