Paul do it by hand. I’m trying to work out for sure whether you have lacquer. If you do then I will advise or pop over one day with a machine and some polishes. But I need to know if there is material to polish. I can also take some measurements of your paints thickness on every panel so you’ll know positively what is original and what isn’t. That will help you in the future if you ever decide to pick up a machine and have a go. Or if anyone else has a go for you. I need you to find a spot out of the way. Then polish a tiny area with a mid cut polish on a microfibre cloth . If it responds by shining like it used to do you have lacquer and I will sort it for you. If your cloth turns black or you can’t get a shine then it’s paint. It will either polish up or your cloth will turn black though. OK Charlie i will try tomorrow if it stops raining. I have some of that G3 i think it is, will that be suitable? G3s fine Paul. Wet your polishing cloth and go steady with that stuff.

I've been out with the G3 and rubbed an area for a few minutes and there is no sign of Black paint on the cloth Charlie, but the spot i have been rubbing is still showing dull as well??

Can’t understand it Paul. Very unusual !! G3 has quite some bite initially. It’s the all in one polish favoured by bodyshops as it’s fast. Not polish I recommend but if it hasn’t produced a shine I’m not sure what will. If there is no base/ colour leaving its signature on the cloth then there has to be lacquer. That just has to respond to cutting compound which polish essentially is. Something doesn't seem quite right. What did the body shop guys say ? Did any of them use a Paint thickness gauge ? Any opinions from them on why it’s faded or if they think there is lacquer or not ? EDIT. Just looked back in the thread and saw where it says the bodyshops both say no lacquer present. Obviously they should know. Still don’t understand why A it’s previously been fine and B why there is no colour on your polishing cloth.

Hi Charlie. Here is a piccy of one of the areas i have been polishing and as you can see i think there is no difference? Out of the three shops we've been to only one wasn't sure if it had lacquer or not but none of them did any paint thickness or lacquer tests. Another said it looks like the wrong colour has been used but didn't understand either when i showed the piccys of when we first had it looking shiny.

There must be some sort of reaction under the lacquer. There must be lacquer or you would be seeing colour on cloth and your not. I have only ever seen something similar twice and was never able to say for sure what was happening. So unfortunately it looks like it’s going to require paint. There is no doubt in my mind that polishing won’t help. G3 would have done something to the finish and clearly it hasn’t. I still reckon those panels have been painted. More sure now than before. 👍👍

So you think it does need re-painting Charlie? The body shop hasn't long phoned saying they can now get us in next Tuesday for two days due to a cancellation so i have told them to book us in.
There is a new detailing place opened up near us which is always rammed when we drive past so if we get chance we'll take it in there to see what they reckon first.

Repeating myself here but if it won’t polish and the dullness bothers you then yes. It’s not responding to polish so paint is the only answer. Your detailer may apply a wax or sealant that improves the looks but they can’t achieve anything permanent .. It’s a strange one it really is and bear in mind I’m looking at pictures not at the actual car. I would love to gently polish it with Menzerna Power gloss but I doubt it would do anything other than prove for certain what we already know.
