I’m amazed the last MOT didn’t have at least an advisory for surface rust. Or have I missed that ? I feel sure any of us here would if given that advisory would have looked very closely at the areas advised…… My MX5 when I took it for MOT two years back nearly had that advisory… But the tester told me so under the car we both went…. I’m not joking it was ridiculous to say an advisory was required. I of course being a beligerant git at times…….. OK all the time suggested the car was re MOTd in the presence of a ministry inspector. It was decided the MOT would be aborted and I would bugger off somewhere else. My main and big concern was if the car had the word “ corrosion “ on its MOT history it would ruin any chance of me being able to sell it….. Anyway the Test was aborted and I voiced my opinion before leaving the garage. I then took the car to a trusted mate who does any paint when needed. Up on the ramp the car went…. The MX5 has two drain tubes from the roof. Mazda saw fit to stop the factory under seal 6 inches short of the drain outlets. Under the two outlets were rusty marks that and I’m not kidding could be wiped off with my finger. And that MOT tester wanted to put an advisory for that. Un bliddy believable. I’d love too see under Kev’s car… I’m not for a second suggesting it’s not Tommy cotton but I’m curious as to why it wasn’t advised last MOT especially as it’s now really bad. Cars don’t rot overnight. I do understand that it’s hard finding trustworthy welders or mechanics but I think before I broke a car for spares I’d get an opinion and have a good prod and poke myself. It’s bad Charlie. First question I asked was who MOTd it last year but apparently it didn’t LOOK bad. This years tester has intentionally knocked the surface rust off to reveal the extent. It looks like the wreck of the Titanic. My red 2006 model had paint peeling off the sills less than a year old. The 2010 was different again.

Thanks Don for help getting phone photos on here. Yes….it DID fail last year for sill rust, but garage said they plated it where seatbelt mounting was and undersealed that area. Even remarked other side had already been done previously for same fault. When Inasked the mechanic last year should I just scrap it, he said to scrap it to HIM….! No way he said, not at that mileage. They even quoted £300.00 to “further rectify and strengthen…” A year later, we have this…..no way would I have spent the money and time on it had I known the extent of the rust.
Different Garage who MOT checked it this year just quoted £8-900:to rectify. Really no know which way to go. Cannae be bliddy bothered any more in honesty.

It does look bad but it’s still repairable… It’s a bit like those homes under the hammer houses where the property’s look rough but the folk that buy them rip them apart anyway… Least the sensible ones do……..
For me I would get it done but only if I had 100% confidence in a proper and I do mean proper job and a price guarantee of say 1K. But I completely understand if if Kev just hasn’t got the appetite to get it done. Obviously not having someone you know who could fix it isn’t helping.
I would think the car as it sits must be worth 2K providing a buyer is sensible and is prepared to take it on. A trade buyer possibly a garage owner with the facilities to get it fixed would be the best kind of buyer.
It’s a tough one Kev….. I could get in touch with my nieces fella in Glasgow if you like. He ain’t my nieces fella anymore but he’s a decent lad and may know someone who could repair it…. He’s the lad who worked at that fancy bodywork place Mitchell Ingliss or something like that…..

That is a bit of a joke as it only take 15-30 mins to price up a job, only time it could take longer if they need to remove anything for a better look .

Texted him this morning, asking if the Rav had been stolen. Not a word back. Hence the reason the Jag is going to Paisley, 3.5 hours away, to get the timing and auxiliary belts changed 14/11. Would not trust these banjo playing wuckfits with such an important job.

Grovellling apologies.....just picked up on this post.
The guys at Preserve and Protect in Johnstone have just done my 2002 with dinitrol. They remarked its one of the cleanest RAV4s they've seen. The chap/garage have a good old school welder who fixes rot - I've seen his work and its good. They showed me a Hilux - much younger than my 2002, and it was well rotten. If you give them a call, mention my name (the big guy wi a nice RAV). If you haven't already committed. If I'd known about them sooner, I'd have given tjem numer 2 RAV to sort out the rear subframe rust.

It is now available to anybody on here at SEVERE mate’s rates. Other than that I might fix….or scrap……what a waste. MOT until 7/11. My general healthfulness is such that belting up and doon tae Central Belt does not appeal anymore, Jaguar or not….lol.

Saw a couple of posts on Rav4World showing the replacement of the rotten rear subframe...feeling ill as I now realise I could have saved at least number 2.
