2006 Rav 4.3 very first of……2 litre petrol Automatic…….NB…..59,000 bliddy miles…..59k FFS. Read on……
Spent last couple of weeks machine polishing it in preparation for MOT running oot on 7.11.2022. Was putting MOT on a bit early as had sold it for just under £4000.00. There is only wan person hereon who could have machined it better and had it looking better….Collinite Wax is STILL number wan…..thanks Charlie……photo MAY follow if I can stop crying my effin eyes oot…..car failed its MOT spectacularly…….SILLS WERE AN INSULT TO GINGER NUT BISCUITS AND PERFORATED IF FARTED CLOSE TO….
Moral of the story….? Paul…….NB re your twin exhaust system question…….ALL STOP SPENDING MONEY on these aging but still lovely cars unless you have professional advice that it is not imminently dying of tin cancer. I have here a stupendous engine and gearbox, 5 lovely reconditioned alloys with superb tyres, etc….etc….etc…..remember…..59k miles inland from Central Belt of Scotland. Another six weeks and Fred and Barney could put their feet through it.
Car is phuqued…..RIP. Keich, bum, toley, fart, pee, pish, piddle……care not wan jot about the £££…..cracking waste of a cracking car.
Edit……in May this year, Andy shcm gave my wife the opporchancity to buy his utterly obsessively well kept Urban Cruiser, which we did, little knowing the Rav was going to fail so soon after acquiring……thanks Andy…..saved ma life min.

That’s seriously bad news Kev. Condolences 😥. Nevertheless, at the risk of incurring a BK tirade, it’s not often (in fact very rarely) that the tin worm is found in RAVs. I mean we’re on our 7th (or is it 8) since’02 and every one was solid in that respect; having owned my fair share of shonkers over the years I always checked carefully before buying and checked regularly after. But bearing in mind how fastidious you are about your cars, the question has to be asked, how could it rot so comprehensively? Especially when, as you say, it’s always lived in a relatively benign location. Could something have had an impact before you bought it? I guess it’s possible that something went wrong with the original factory rustproofing. Obviously Mr.T wouldn’t be interested in a 16 year old car but if it were me, I’d be inclined to have a word with Toyota. After all their reputation for reliability and build quality is something that they value.

Part of the problem is auld age, Jamesy…..not the car’s….mine. I was never really fit and mobile enough to inspect the underside at purchase 11/19, with a fool service record from new to that date. What really disappoints me is a local garage who took not inconsiderable coinage to touch up some white van man damage, and some wife daftarsity in honesty. In supposedly doing some undersealing they MUST HAVE NOTICED some of what was going on underneath. Do let me politely correct you on one thing though……the first 4.3s and up to early 2008 are renowned for sills and jacking point rot. Toyota fixed this, the dealers informed me, by late 2008/9 and complimented me on the car’s aesthetics…..
Begs the question also……why did the garage last year FAIL it, same reason only implication was MINOR, then do a bit of welding at my behest, then tell me that’s it ok for a few more fekn years…?
Different world and attitudes up here, believez moi.

That bad news Kev ☹️ Couple of things …how serious Is the corrosion ? Would it be inner and outer Sills ? Did you get a quote to get it fixed. Maybe £500 spend on welding would get you a Financial return . Next thing ..were the sills advised last year on the mot and odd they should get so bad in one years motoring …..have you got a photo of the corrosion ?

Nevertheless it sounds as if your garage has been a bit less than honest with you.

Thereby hangs the strange bit, Jimbob…..wife’s three door was in ok nick underneath when sold…..it was a 2004, yet here we have a 2006 five door 4.3 rotten. Usually back ends that rot in 3 doors apparently. Have decided to price repair…..watch this space. As for garage honesty, you got that in wan.

I occasionally visit the RAV4 page on FB and have seen several folk complaining of rust on the early 4.3 cars. To be fair I though it was exaggerated . But seeing this makes me wonder…..Rust is not usually associated with these cars !
Kev is it not worth getting it repaired ? A grand buys a fair bit of welding if you can find a decent place to do it. ??

Therein lies the rub, Charlie…..even after five years I have not formed a very high opinion of much that ANY trades people are doing up here. Example….a mechanic told me today he could get me an MOT in Inverness….! Got feelers out so will see what surfaces.

Ah fek it Kev. Obviously I knew you planned to part company with the RAV but not this way.
As above, welding or cut losses?
Others have broken non runners themselves for parts before now, but, no offence, I would imagine impractical and too much hassle in your situation.

Wow really didn’t expect to hear a Rav to fail on rust. Hope you get it sorted BK I’m sure you’ll find a decent place that should be able to hopefully sort it out for you.

Correct, Anders…..geographics play a big part in my thinking. If I was in Glasgow, I would break it to forum members if wanted. Urban Cruiser now her best pal…..loves it.

I’m amazed the last MOT didn’t have at least an advisory for surface rust. Or have I missed that ? I feel sure any of us here would if given that advisory would have looked very closely at the areas advised……
My MX5 when I took it for MOT two years back nearly had that advisory… But the tester told me so under the car we both went…. I’m not joking it was ridiculous to say an advisory was required. I of course being a beligerant git at times…….. OK all the time suggested the car was re MOTd in the presence of a ministry inspector. It was decided the MOT would be aborted and I would bugger off somewhere else. My main and big concern was if the car had the word “ corrosion “ on its MOT history it would ruin any chance of me being able to sell it….. Anyway the Test was aborted and I voiced my opinion before leaving the garage.
I then took the car to a trusted mate who does any paint when needed. Up on the ramp the car went…. The MX5 has two drain tubes from the roof. Mazda saw fit to stop the factory under seal 6 inches short of the drain outlets. Under the two outlets were rusty marks that and I’m not kidding could be wiped off with my finger. And that MOT tester wanted to put an advisory for that. Un bliddy believable.
I’d love too see under Kev’s car… I’m not for a second suggesting it’s not Tommy cotton but I’m curious as to why it wasn’t advised last MOT especially as it’s now really bad. Cars don’t rot overnight.
I do understand that it’s hard finding trustworthy welders or mechanics but I think before I broke a car for spares I’d get an opinion and have a good prod and poke myself.

My Gawd Kev sorry to hear this mukka and hope you do get it sorted ASAP as the rest of the car sounds amazing, but as others have said surely it would have been picked up on previous MOTs well beforehand.
Re the twin exhaust, i haven't heard back from the seller since last week so the deal might be off as he did want it collecting initially but he agreed to post it for me :post:
