Hi all, new Rav 4 owner here from the UK - I've just purchased a lovely looking 2006 Rav4 XT4 in Carbon Quartz with a 2.0 petrol and manual transmission! She's generally in very good condition, but I have a few questions about some niggles that I am going to need to sort.
1. Firstly, I did quite a bit of research before buying, as you would expect, but for some reason I was sure I was buying an XA20 mk2 Rav4, but now am not sure and think it might be an XA30 mk3, or right at the changeover point - please could somebody tell me how I can definitively tell? It has the engine with red lettering on cam cover and no airbox on top, round fog lights at the front, but still has the spare wheel on the rear hatch, which has me confused as I thought mk3s had those removed? The dash and clocks are what I think are the new style - in some places I can see that a mk2 is listed as 2000-06, but others it is listed as 2000-05?
2. The air conditioning isn't working, the compressor runs when I turn the fan up and press the AC switch, but the air never gets icy cold. Previous owner (private not trade) said they had taken it to be regassed, but technician said it was full already, so it appears to not be a leak - please can somebody tell me how to diagnose properly?
3. Retro-fitting cruise control - I've seen some videos showing that I can just buy the mk3 stalk, remove airbag, connect up and secure, hole saw through the side of the steering wheel hub as it doesn't have the factory hole and then change the clutch switch for a cruise control switch, is this right? Please could anyone give me the part numbers?
4. Rear brakes aren't sweeping the disc clean, quite a bit of rust on the inner edge and discs look old, are the rear calipers known for binding / sticking? I'm thinking, just replace discs and pads, clean up and grease caliper sliding bolts? Anything else to be aware of?
5. The Rav seems to have a weird little issue whereby when I depress the clutch to change gear, either up or down, the revs rise a bit and then drop - is this a problem with the clutch switch, throttle body alignment or something else? I've seen this issue on other cars and it is usually something like this. It changes gear perfectly and clutch seems generally good, no slippage.
Thanks in advance!

Take a look at the pictures in the history as linked by Mike (when you asked the same question on another forum ) and look specifically at the headlights and the shape of the rear quarter light - they are distinctively different ... A 2006 car is likely to be a Mk 3 but could be a late Mk 2 ... An XT4 would have had a tailgate mounted spare. Toyota didn't 'remove' the tailgate mounted spare until after they discontinued the "XT4" designation.

Hi welcome to the club.
If it is a 5 door the rear side window is a give away, if the edge of the window nearest the rear door slopes parallel to the rear of the car, it is a mk2, if it slopes the opposite direction creating a triangle of side panel between the window and the rear of the car its a mk3.
I have added cruise control on a mk2 auto by adding the switch, i guess it is the same for a manual.
A/C, our mk2 isn't super cold and has been struggling a bit in the 35° temperatures we have been getting, if it is fully pressurised then it must be something other than a leak.
The rear brakes (mk2) are easy to work on although i found adjusting the handbrake a bit fiddly.
Hope you manage to get it all sorted. Dave

Hi dennis10 and welcome to the club.. :TU: Regarding the aircon , do you have a good flow of air via the blower ?

Item 4…..Brake Discs. No..the calipers are not renowned for sticking, but if you can see they are cruddy on the OUTER FACES, you can bet your bottom Euro the inside faces will be akin to ginger nut biscuit faces. Budget for pads and discs. Slider pins will need a good clean up too, further exacerbating the unclean sweep you arecwitnessing. New pins and rubber bellow bits can be bought on Ye Bay fo not much pennies. Get brake fluid dropped oot and changed too.

Morning all! Thanks for your replies, I've since worked out I definitely have an XA30 mk3 Rav4, which is nice! I spent 2 hours yesterday cleaning the interior, every single panel and nook and cranny! The previous owners did not have the standards that I do! I'm trying to buy some leather dye in the correct colour just to spruce the seats up, but I can't work out whether the leather option in these is black and thus just a bit faded, or a dark bluey/grey? Were all the leather interiors the same colour? I've purchased rear discs and pads, so will set about doing that over the next few weeks. Have also purchased a clutch cruise control switch and the steering wheel stalk, for about £28 combined - lets hope it doesn't require extra loom etc or software activation.
AC is blowing out air normally, it's cool, but not cold. My next door neighbour is a mechanic and had a quick look at it for me - I told him that somebody had told the previous owners that it was full of refrigerant/gas, he tried releasing some from the H+L valves and said that he could not really smell it, so to get it double checked as it could be just low pressure/levels
On the MOT the middle silencer was an advisory for a mild blow, in fact I can hear it when I get down in that area, I suspect the exhaust does not have long for this world and as I intend on keeping this car for a good few years, I'm wondering if the best solution is to get a stainless steel replacement fitted - are there any good off the shelf options on the rav 4 or am I better off taking it to an exhaust place and having it fabricated? I'm no stranger to home mechanics, so swapping it myself is not an issue. Or are there any decent standard replacement aftermarket options or are they all crap that will rust away within 2 years? Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance! Welcome to the club, Dennis. Hope you enjoy the RAV. You’ll find that it is a brilliant car. Most of my RAV experience has been with 4.2s but I’ve owned a 4.3 D-CAT similar to yours and I loved it. Re your upholstery, I think you’ll find that the UK cars were all black leather; the fabric interiors were grey, I believe. It would be a good idea to get the aircon re-gassed first as that’s the most likely problem. Exhausts were never an issue on any of our RAVS (& we’ve had 7 as well as 2 Land Cruisers and an IQ) but I know that a few of the club members have replaced them so they should be along to advise anon. Meanwhile good health to enjoy your new toy!😊😊

Thanks in advance! Rear discs/ pads. RAV4 has the handbrake shoes within the rear disc hub, This makes it a non standard replacement when it comes to doing the job. There should be a tutorial on here somewhere. The wiring will 99% be in place for your cruise control. AC… You can buy a dedicated AC thermometer off Ebay for £8. Pop it into the air vent with the AC on. It should read 5 degrees. If it’s above that it’s re gas time. One or two here me being one had stainless steel exhausts made up. My car at the time was a 4.3 model 2.2 diesel and the droning on the motorway was awful. So bad I binned it and had genuine Toyota fitted simply because nothing else was available at the time. Bosal do quality replacements now.

Thanks in advance! If the leather seats are factory fit, the colour code will be on the chassis plate 👍🏻 I cross reference the trim code form my previous Lexus with cream leather seats , and then purchased a dye kit .
