So how are you all keeping your car clean these drought ridden days? Although we aren't in the hose pipe area yet and haven't been since 1976 i think, though i think we will be soon, i am not using the hosepipe to clean our Rav even though it is pretty dirty now. Is it best to just leave it dirty for now or will a soapy bucket of water do and swilled off quickly with another bucket of clean water and dried off?

Like you, Paul, we’re not facing a ban anytime soon but as I’ve not washed the cars for ages, I did both of them yesterday when the afternoon shade reached the drive. Gave the RAV a coat of Collinite afterwards. My thinking was to give them their half-yearly waxing now just in case we get a ban in the short-term. The IQ needs its bonnet sprayed so I’ll wax it once that’s done.

Personally I'm not going to wash the car(s) when it is excessively hot and then only when I can rinse them properly with a hose. So, for now, they are just going to have to stay 'dirty'. Both could do with a proper protective 'wax' coat, and I should have done that earlier this year - maybe in the autumn ...

Leave them alone with the exception of bird crap. Bird crap adheres to the finishes then shrinks and it’s the drag from shrinkages that can marr the surfaces so remove it with a saturated cloth allowing the muck to soften.
When it comes time to wash I will be snowfoaming twice before touching the car.
I’m afraid I get slightly irritated by these so called water shortages. There has not been one reservoir built since 1991 and the existing ones are crumbling. Since 1991 the UK population has increased by 10,000,000 yes Ten million and no extra provision has been made to provide the extra resources we need and water is one of those.
Just think how many houses are being built right across the country. Each and every house will be connected to the services so the applicable area water authorities gain what ? An average of let’s say 500 quid per house or flat.
That’s bad but how about the effluent ? It gets pumped into our rivers which are now widely regarded as a dumping ground for untreated effluents… Our rivers are a national disgrace and our inept government does sweet FA about it.
Then consider that an absolute Minimum of treated tap water seeps into the ground through leakage.
Meanwhile the water companies make bigger profits year on year. If we use a hosepipe we can be fined. The water companies can also be fined for the pumping of s hit into the rivers and they do ! But they regard the fines as cheaper than treating the effluent….
I paid my water bill in full earlier this year. Will I get a partial refund do you think ?

No, Charlie, it’s developing what I can only describe as splits at three places about two inches up from the lower edge of the bonnet. It reminds me of old dried out gloss paint that has weathered and just before it begins to actually peel away from the timber. I intend to take the bonnet off the car, rub it down properly, prime, paint and lacquer with rattle cans.

Waters realy tight here at the moment, so when we do have a the occasional shower I go out in it and at least give the car a quick clean over, even if it is to get rid of all the dust and Sahara sand. And after all this heat it is refreshing to be out in the rain, and still warm enough to do it in shorts and flipflops.

If the car has some oily road film marks, I'm sure it will do a decent job of shifting those and leave the car looking shiny(er). If the car is covered in sand and grit it will produce a nice cutting paste and leave the paintwork covered in scratches and swirlies ... You'd need to at least rinse off any grit before you started using it by which time you might just as well have washed it with water.

Seems ok on the paintwork, glass, etc but rubbish on the wheels. Not brave enough to use it on the soft paint of the Mazda yet, think it would do more harm than good on that tbh. Used to use it all the time when I lived in London, not many other options really. In the winter i'd take the car to the local jet wash and get the worst off first though. Works well on a wet car too, which is handy.

Waterless products quite frankly are a joke. I wouldn’t pick them up if they were free…
Paul there is no hosepipe ban in your area so just wash the car 👍👍👍
