Hi Guys, a friend of mine who lives in Oswestry is looking at buying a Honda Jazz from a local garage:
In the past when someone has been looking at buying a vehicle and seeking it's history, some members have come up with a wealth of information - but where did it come from? I've been on the www.gov.uk site at: www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/ and find that it has had no MOT for over 2 years. Now in view of the mileage it might be a vehicle owned by an older person who has not been able to drive it and had it stored in their garage. Or it could be something else. I think it may have been Jim or Bob who knew their way around the system but I can't find a post with with any useful information about sleuthing! Any pointers gratefully received :TU: as would any opinions on the value of the vehicle.

Hasn't been taxed for a similar time Chris. It averaged about 4K miles/year prior to the 2018 MOT. Wonder if it was from a bereavement? You can't find out previous owner without the V5.

www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/ is the correct site, Chris. By clicking on "MoT History" link once the car details have come up you can see every test that has taken place with all the advisories and fails. These will give you an indication of how well the car has (or hasn't) been looked after. Sometimes you get some rather insignificant items relating to tread depth or light corrosion but I tend to feel that lots of advisories on most of the tests say something about how conscientious the owners have been about caring for the vehicle. Sometimes, when trawling AutoTrader, it's worth going onto the vendor's website (unless it's a private sale)because you might get some added info about the car or get a feel for the veracity of the seller; it's always worth looking at any customers' feedback to see if the vendor has a habit of selling iffy cars or has poor after-sale service. If you zoom into the photos on either site you can sometimes pick up on body issues, tyre problems, kerbed/chewed alloys, etc.

I'll have my magnifying glass to the photos later this evening. Where would it say if the car was a rebuilt write-off?

There is a way of getting a free but basic HPI check. Go onto EBay and fill in the form for selling a car…. Part way through Ebays system checks if the car is on the register…. OK it’s a bit of a chore but it’s reliable.
That said if the car comes up clear and your into buying it get a proper HPI done. The above is the first free step. If it comes up with a marker it’s cost you nowt 👍👍

The selling garage should know the story (even if they aren't to be entirely trusted).

You hit the nail on the head there Phillip! I really don't know how much I trust the garage as I've never dealt with them. From the quality of their website, I suspect a fairly low budget dad & son outfit who may be perfectly genuine - but how do you tell?

We bought our previous Rav from a place that looked like a right dump but the service was unbelievable. They really went out of their way to help us, tea/coffee biscuits and really genuine. Looking at the place I wanted walk away but then I thought as we’re here and travelled so far might as well take a look. The car turned out to be fantastic and we kept her for around 10 years before it met it’s Demise when guess where it got scraped along the whole passenger side 🤔🤔. My brother likes buying cars that are damaged and gets them fixed up only light damage ones usually Cat D. He was usually able to contact the previous keeper for spare keys and history when the log book used to arrive but I noticed they don’t have the previous keepers details anymore like they used to.

Think you can write to DVLA if a valid reason to contact a previous owner buts it normally for fines or after an accident …..and they charge for it !
