So Mrs P got in her Rav last night after work and tried to start it but was just getting a clicking sound and wouldn't start. Fortunately a taxi driver had seen what was happening and asked if she would like a jump start and it started straight away, and this morning it fired over straight away. Could this be the alternator on it's way out again??

Clicking sound is normally the battery low or almost dead, you need to charge the battery up than with the vehicle running, see what voltage you have across the battery .A good working alternator with be reading 13.5v or more. Once you know the alternator is good I would suspect a defective battery or an interior light has been left on .Best then get the battery tested .

I would also just check the battery connections.

Has it got the small 45-50Ah battery that is standard for the petrol? ours had one like that and although it should be fine, our car has push pull hand controls that were occasionally leaving enough weight on the brake pedal to turn the brake lights on (why they work without the ignition I have no idea) anyway I found that the battery drained vary quickly to a point that it would not start, I have now fixed the hand control problem, but last time I changed the battery I bought the larger one that is normally for the diesel, to be honest it wasn't a lot more but gives us much better security as it is an automatic and we tend to do short journeys often with a gap of a week between. I presume so Dave, we got it from Toyota and is there own make, well it has Toyota labels on it, but it started fine again tonight after been stood outside Mrs Ps works all day so i checked the terminals and gave them half a turn, good job i did check as the good samaritan last night had left the positive red cover off on the battery cover

It's been starting through all those hard frosts we had back in January, so is there summat on it's way out, starter motor, alternator? We'll try and get it to a garage over the weekend to get some tests done on it :TU:

Well it is said battery and it has been since, Mrs P is sure nothing was left on, plugged in or owt, she didn't even have the radio on so not sure why it would have happened? Went on a nice drive out over to Kenilworth castle earlier with the Pooches and had a very pleasant walk round the grounds with Ralfy getting lots of attention and even saw another Berner just two weeks younger
