Hey guys, not sure if this is the place to post but really trying to wrap my head around this one!
Currently living in the UK, born and raised in the states though and have driven Toyota's (mostly Gen3 4runners) my whole life. Picked up a 2005 standard trans 2.0L diesel Rav4 here for the light 4x4 I need for work here and overall been loving it... however, I've run into an issue (or perhaps two).
When cold, the car starts fine. Perhaps a little sluggish but as a diesel I was never too worried about it. Lately, though, when the engine is hot (after a decent drive) it won't start and needs at least 10 minutes to cool down and then it starts fine again! It will turn over, the starter motor feeling healthy and full of life but there seems to be no connection with the battery until the engine cools down. I've tried pumping the rubber nodule on the fuel pump to see if its an issue of fuel not getting to to the engine but it makes no difference. When I took it to my familiar garage, they were fairly stumped as well until they saw a note when looking online that the ECU in Rav4's of this gen have a fault, causing poor starting when hot. However, I've also heard things like issues with earth wires, battery replacement, glow plugs, etc. so not sure where to go from here.
This may or may not be connected, but about a month ago I had an issue on the highway, driving around 75mph with high revs when the engine turbo power cut out and the VSC and check engine light came on. I pulled over, turned off the vehicle, couldn't get it to turn back on (which in retrospect seems to be more of the starter issue) until about 10-15 minutes later when it came back on and seemed totally fine. I read the code and it was the P1251 Turbo code, but since then haven't had any issue with the turbo. However, since then, this starter issue has been much more prevalent!
I wanted to reach out and ask if anyone has any idea of what might be going on! Am I right in trying to chase down the issue through fixing the ECU? Through my research on this board and others, both issues have been potentially connected to ECU faults. Or might there be other solutions... I'm open to really anything!
