Good morning guys I am in the process of down sizing from my Landcruiser that I have owned for 16 trouble free years to a Rav4 having retired from caravanning it is time to purchase a smaller 4x4 with the same build quality, is there any thing that I should know regarding problems that I may encounter with models from the years 2010 - 2018 all help would be very welcome.

Greetings....
While few cars are completely trouble free the 2010 on is pretty solid.
Earlier cars had engine issues and it’s not by any means unknown for the later 4.3 cars from 2009 to 2013 when the car had a complete change to what we call the 4.4 ..... Safest bet is the 2013 on which were diesels initially but followed by the hybrids... There were a few petrol cars but not many. 2.2 is the best diesel the 2.0 proved unpopular...
Budget will of course be the biggest factor. I have a late 2013 2.2 diesel automatic AWD Invincible. Bought it Ex demo and it’s never so much as blown a lightbulb.....👍👍👍

As Charlie says, RAVs from 2010 on are pretty much trouble free. Like Charlie, I had a 2013 2.2 D-CAT AWD auto for seven years without any issues at all. Others will tell you that the 2.0 VVTi petrol may be even more reliable / bullet proof.
You don't say what you are looking for save for "a smaller 4x4 with the same build quality". There are some 2WD RAVs so you'll want to take care to avoid them - a FWD 2.0 diesel manual was introduced for folk that needed lower fuel consumption more than AWD. And while other RAVs are AWD it's not an 'off roader" in the same sense a Landcruiser is ...
So what are your requirements in more detail? And what are you looking at?

:welcome: to the club :TU: Previous two comments cover about as much as we can tell you without knowing how you intend to use the vehicle - daily driver, longer runs, short hops, fully loaded, driver and one passenger typically, mainly road use or off road requirements, towing other than caravan etc? Is economy a major factor? Manual or auto? Give us a few pointers and more focussed advice will doubtless be forthcoming.

We are both retired so will be using the car for pleasure and shopping trips, we currently drive approximately 10k miles a year,so reliability, comfort and economy are some of our concerns we also live in a rural area so 4wd is a benefit in adverse weather, as previously stated we have retired from caravanning so know longer require the landcruiser that has served us well for the past 16 years and are looking for a smaller vehicle to take its place. Our next vehicle will also have to be a SUV as we are both of an age where mobilty is a slight problem and find getting in and out of a SUV much easier Hopefully the Rav4 will suit are needs and will be as good to us as are Landcruiser. Any tips on looking at any problems that I should find when looking at vehicles dated 2010 -2016 would be appreciated

If you can find a dealer maintained RAV that has been well maintained you should have few problems. As mentioned above, make sure the model you go for is 4WD. In your preferred date range all will have had at least one MOT so have a look at the MOT history of any vehicle you are interested in as a guide to how well it has been looked after. Fails for easily checked items such as tyres, lights, wipers etc are a clear indication as to how well a previous owner has cared for the car. Advisories regarding worn suspension components could indicate off-road use. The Toyota extended warranty is one of the best around so well worth factoring that into financial considerations.

My wife can very easily get in and out of our car which is the 2.2 diesel automatic..... This car is the highest spec I could get at the time. The 2.2 was then the engine of choice. We also live way out in the sticks so AWD was one of the definates on the list. MPG on any of these cars isn’t brilliant. We get circa 35 MPG driving neither fast or slow. I just drive it.. There is of course the Hybrid but in the real world I don’t think your going to gain much. Personally I’m not interested in the hybrid because I don’t understand them. The RAV4 is a brilliant all rounder. Ours is the 4.4 which is the biggest space wise. The AWD system is one of if not the best of its kind. Stunningly efficient easy to use. I never bother with the Diff lock button or even the driving modes either. Reliability has been 100% so far. Prices vary enormously. Spec , Colour. Mileage etc determine the prices asked. I haven’t a clue what this one is worth and to be honest I don’t care cos I will drive it for some years yet. It’s done only 32K miles so far.

One other thing is the previous generation up to 2013 can suffer engine issues. It’s not as common as it was in the earlier cars but member Rambler on here had the engine go west on his low miles 2012 car. I’m talking 2.2 diesel here none of the other engines had problems.
So far there has been No issues with the 4.4 model 2.2 Diesel engines.

+1 for Charlie's report. Mine is on 63 plate, done around 110k miles, and had no issues. The only issue i had was the touch screen was not working properly, but that was replaced under extended warranty with no arguments. Ps it can also pull a caravan...
