The small panel that holds the mirror controls appears loose. i went to 'fold' the mirrors and the panel pushed in. i managed to get my finger under it by the handbrake and push it up ,but it still not firm. how can i get to the underside of the switches/panel to tighten it.

Lightly moisten your fingers and put them into the small storage pocket shown in your photo. Apply a little pressure to the upper internal face and the whole unit should pop out. It is only held with a few tabs. Easiest when interior of car is warm.

The switches click in to a 'keeper' housing on the back of the outer moulding Bob. EDIT

EDIT I have to admit David that my usual method ( on my 4.3 ) is to remove the panel holding the auxillary socket from inside of the centre console and then push the panel Bob is reffering to upwards. When the handbrake is adjusted it is necessary to get at the end of the cable which is adjacent to the underside of the panel - so I've done it a few times! I may well try the wet finger trick next time

EDIT Thanks ,i'll give that a go when its a little warmer. it doesn't seem so loose today , so maybe i pushed it back with my finger into the clips. thanks again. Bob

today managed to push the whole assembly through when unfolding the mirrors. i as suggested took the housing out . i couldn't get enough grip to pull it up so used a plastic lever to get it out.i discovered that one of the little lugs had broken off. i have used a small amount of superglue and will see how it goes. i would have pinned it but the mirror control pad is directly behind and i was worried i would foul it. if it fails i will need to source a new/second hand one. repair doesn't look as messy as the pic depicts.
