Please try and keep this conversation simple and in lay man terms, bit as always education for others 😂

The cars aren’t permanent 4WD .... Most of the time they’re front wheel drive surely ....... I’m not Upto speed with the newer RAV4 model 4wd systems but I’m sure it will be covered in the handbook.....or maybe someone knows for sure 👍🏻👍🏻 The 4.3 and 4.4 have much the same set up. The AWD is on demand. As you move off from the kerb all wheels are driven. If you accelerate away hard the rear wheels are driven for longer either way drive to the rear drops away once 28 or 28 MPH is reached unless slip is detected. So AWD under normal driving but held longer if driving hard. At any speed the system will send drive to either or both rear wheels if conditions demand. The electronics control all this. Engaging the Diff lock means AWD until the car reaches 28 or 29 MPH. Then it reverts to FWD again unless slip is detected. It’s a very clever easy system to use. The driver can’t tell when the drive is moved to or from the rear axle. its definitely not permanent 4WD. Toyota call it AWD rather than 4WD..... The Hybrid cars are different again. Don or Andy could put it in better words than me but you’ll get my drift.... 👍👍👍

I have that problem... with the Quatrac5. Alignment is fine, worn evenly across , but uneven. The noise is not that horrible so decided to leave them tried for a short while to put them at the front, but the noise was much worse! So they are at the back, and will be changed when worn. It started more than a year after changing tires, so could not complain. With that kind of wear surely turning the tyres round on the rims would help ? Providing they’re not directional? That is interesting! Was never offered that. Wouldn't swapping sides have the same effect?

Wouldn't swapping sides have the same effect? No. The inside edge would still be on the inside........ When I used to do track days on my Yamaha R1 at Silverstone on the Indy circuit or at Caldwell Park both of which have mostly right hand bends we used to turn the tyres round on the rims to get more from the tyres. They were directional but only because the sipes were to dissipate water if it was wet, So as long as it was dry we got a whole days riding from one set of tyres.

Rav 4.3 had facility of electric rear wheel clutch system Boab which brought in drive from rear wheels when wheel spin or even sideways slip detected........2007 on at a guess. Mibeez 2006. It always took away ALWAYS in 4WD from rest, but seamlessly switched off rear wheels when not required.
Charlie beat me to it ah see.....

The Ravs clever electronics saved me during that bad winter a few years ago.
Was going downhill round a very tight bend just a bit to fast. Back end slid probably no more than a foot or two and I felt the brake being applied to the inside rear and what I think was the drive being apportioned ......
I wasn’t going fast just to fast for the icy snowy road. If I had lifted of the gas it might have fesulted in terminal oversteer but I didn’t and the car sorted itself out.
The Ravs electronics are right up there with the very best and might even be the best. 👍👍👍

Update....tyres replaced today and no more annoying noise, it's also a better comfortable ride.
So the Toyota mechanic was right, along with the rest of you.
Job done.

2 new rear tyres, the fronts have 5/6 mm, so I should be ok.
It was the rears that where shot to hell.

I had the 4x4 tracking done checked and it was fine.
The only thing that came up during this thread conversation was that it was the first time I did not change all 4 tyres together. I only had the fronts done and left the rears alone.
Other than that, don't know. I'm just going to keep a close eye on this.
